‘Doctor Strange’ poised to break box office records

- By Amanda Kondolojy

The hottest ticket in Orlando for Mother’s Day weekend looks like it just might be “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which will have previews starting this afternoon at 3 p.m. in the Orlando area ahead of its wide opening May 6.

Expectations are high for this film, as it will be the first Marvel Studios release of the post-pandemic era (last year’s “SpiderMan: No Way Home” was released by Sony) and follows somewhat disappointing returns for 2021 Marvel films “Eternals” and “Black Widow.” A recent report from Deadline predicts that the film could take in as much as $180 million this weekend, easily surpassing “The Batman” to become the biggest blockbuster of 2022 so far.

Marvel has done its best to keep as many details as possible about this film under wraps in the run up to its release. However, just days before its debut, rumored scenes from the movie that included surprising cameos from other characters leaked online.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently addressed the effect of spoilers in a press conference, saying that “You need to make sure that the experience itself works regardless of what has been spoiled or not,” and while the folks at Marvel “do as good of a job as we can,” keeping spoilers off the internet prior to a film’s release, the success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which was spoiled heavily prerelease, “showed us that [spoilers] did not lessen the experience [for moviegoers].”

Though initial previews for Thursday were either sold out or had very limited seating in the Orlando area when tickets first went on sale last month, additional showtimes have been added in recent days, so those hoping to be among the first to experience this film still have opportunities to check out this high-profile sequel at local theaters including the CMX Plaza Cafe 12 in Downtown, the AMC Altamonte Mall 18 and Studio Movie Grill Sunset Walk in Kissimmee.
