Police: Man who shot at officers arrested
Orlando police arrested a man accused of firing at two officers who were following him in an unmarked agency vehicle Wednesday night because he was driving a stolen car, Chief Orlando Rolón said.
The man was identified as 36-year-old William Bullock, a convicted felon who currently has a warrant for failing to appear in court, Rolón told reporters during a Thursday morning news conference at Orlando Police Department headquarters.
The incident began when OPD’s Crime Center detected a car reported stolen from Jacksonville, Rolón said. The officers driving the unmarked vehicle eventually spotted the stolen car around 8 p.m. and followed Bullock outside of Orlando city limits while they waited for backup units, according to the agency.
“The officers are assuming that they’re just basically providing surveillance at this point,” Rolón said.
Bullock drove by the officers’ vehicle, which was stopped at an intersection in the 4500 block of Jim Glenn Drive in the Rosement area, and began shooting at them “unprovoked,” the chief said. One of the officers returned fire.
Neither Bullock nor the officers were injured, Rolón said.
With the help of other agencies, Bullock was arrested in Ocoee after a police chase, according to OPD.
Rolón said officers are currently processing the stolen car but could see a drum magazine in the vehicle. A drum is a high-capacity cylindrical magazine for firearms that carries many rounds.
Bullock was booked into the Orange County Jail on 11 charges, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer.
The agency did not release the names of the officers, who were placed on paid administrative leave, saying they had invoked confidentiality under Marsy’s Law, the victims’ rights amendment to Florida’s Constitution.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, as is department standard.
