Orlando area sends 10 teams to regional title round

- By J.C. Carnahan

Goals may be hard to come by this week when Orlando area underdogs meet in a Florida High School Athletic Association soccer regional championship game.

No. 5 seed Clermont East Ridge (16-3-1) hosts No. 6 Winter Park (15-12) in a Class 7A Region 2 boys final Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Knights, region finalists for the third consecutive year, have recorded 12 shutouts and allowed just 11 goals with junior Nicholas Aquilino at goalkeeper.

“He doesn’t get mentioned a lot, but he’s been here since freshman year and he’s been a big part of the team,” East Ridge defender Jackson Sandoval said. “He continues to save us a lot.”

Winter Park, with just 12 goals allowed, is playing in a region final for the fourth time since 2019. The Wildcats finished as state runners-up in 2016.

East Ridge and Winter Park are two of 10 boys and girls soccer programs from the area playing in regional finals. Girls winners advance to the state semifinal round on Friday. Boys state semis take place Saturday.

No. 1 seeds Bishop Moore (22-2-1) and Trinity Prep (12-2-1) play home boys soccer matches Wednesday.

The Hornets host Satellite (11-3-5) in Class 4A while Trinity Prep faces Melbourne Holy Trinity Episcopal (15-1-1) in 3A. Bishop Moore defeated Satellite 3-0 two years ago.

Junior Jace Overturf has 23 goals and 9 assists for Bishop Moore. Trinity Prep has outscored opponents 20-4 the past two months.

Celebration (14-2-1) plays at Boca Raton (21-4-0) in 7A and second-year Orange County school Horizon (14-34) plays at Tampa Jesuit (19-2-1) in 5A.

Senior Julio Dlima has 9 goals and 5 assists and junior Jose Dlima has 6 goals and 11 assists for Celebration.

Senior forward Christian Rodriguez leads Horizon with 23 goals and 8 assists. Fullback Chase Duerksen and goalkeeper Daniel Porto anchor the Hawks defense.

Defending 4A girls soccer state champion Bishop Moore (17-2-3) is home Tuesday in a region final vs. Satellite (13-5-1).

Midfielders Katsi Bengoa, Gabby Garcia and Madison Gellner have combined for 19 goals and 19 assists for the Hornets.

Oviedo (17-2-0) hosts Seminole Ridge (18-0-2) in 6A. Seniors Reagan Fitzgerald (16 goals, 8 assists) and Ryleigh Holcomb (11 goals, 20 assists) pace the Lions. Fitzgerald is a transfer from nearby Hagerty.

Montverde Academy (12-2-2), in its return to FHSAA play since winning state titles in 2018 and ‘19, is home vs. Tampa Catholic (17-3-0) in 3A.

Mount Dora Christian (17-2-1) travels to Orange Park to challenge statepower St. Johns Country Day (18-1-1), which has won 11 consecutive championships.

Eighth-grader Sophia Vamvakitis has 14 goals and 11 assists for the Bulldogs. Junior centerback Cora Welter and sophomore striker Hallie Edwards (15 goals) have played big roles for a team that won its first-ever district title.
