1 dead, 1 injured in domestic shooting at Sanford apartments, police say
One person was killed and another seriously injured in a domestic shooting at a Sanford apartment complex late Sunday, police said.
Officers were called to the shooting at the Bel-Air Apartments about 8 p.m. Sunday, arriving to find 27-year-old Myeia Kudakwashe, who had been shot in her abdomen, and 29-year-old Steven Martin, who had been shot in the chest, according to Sanford police spokesperson Bianca Gillett.
Kudakwashe was hospitalized in serious condition while Martin was pronounced dead at the hospital, Gillett said.
In a statement, Gillett said a preliminary investigation had determined that Kudakwashe was at the apartment complex on East Airport Boulevard, which is where she typically exchanges custody of her children with their father, at some point prior to the shooting.
“Based on witness statements, Kudakwashe appeared agitated when arriving at the apartment complex, and she forced her way into the apartment before having to be forcefully removed,” Gillett said. “Witnesses stated she then brandished a firearm before leaving the complex.”
Kudakwashe returned later with Martin, police said, and they were both shot in an exterior walkway on the second floor of the apartments. Gillett’s statement didn’t indicate who fired the shots that wounded them.
“The details of what occurred when they returned are still under investigation,” said Gillett, who added the incident appears to have been “isolated” and “domestic in nature.”
