St. Petersburg’s Dalí Museum is opening new immersive dome

- By Maggie Duffy

Tampa Bay surrealist fanatics, get ready.

“Dalí Alive 360°,” the immersive experience showcasing Salvador Dalí‘s works in the new dome on the grounds of The Dalí Museum, is opening to the public Thursday.

The experience was set to open in July, but a power surge affecting the air-conditioning unit for the dome forced the museum to postpone the opening. The issue has now been resolved, so guests can keep cool while enjoying the world premiere of this exhibit.

The multisensory experience will “envelop visitors in 360 degrees of light and sound” in the new space called “The Dalí Dome.” The dome sits in the museum’s Avant-garden.

It features animations of Dalí’s works — think melting clocks and surreal landscapes — while taking viewers on a journey through his life. Digital images will be projection-mapped from the floor to the ceiling, hence the 360-degree distinction in the title.

The dome’s steel framework is 39 feet tall and 60 feet in diameter and was designed to withstand hurricane winds and storm surges.

“Dalí Alive” was co-produced by the museum and Grande Experiences — the creator of “Van Gogh Alive,” which the museum featured in 2020.

“Dalí Alive 360°” was customized for the dome by Omnispace360, which also engineered the dome and sound projections. The company creates immersive environments, as seen at Austin City Limits in Texas and six Super Bowls.
