Colonial’s girls basketball team will be tested this week while in pursuit of a Florida High School Athletic Association district championship.

The Grenadiers, No. 1 in Class 7A MaxPreps computer rankings, are slotted in District 4 with three others that rank inside the Top 25.

Today’s district semifinals at Timber Creek tips off with Colonial vs. Hagerty at 5 p.m. Boone plays the host Wolves at 7 p.m.

Boone, led by senior McKenna Murphy with 17.4 points per game, ranks No. 6. Timber Creek is No. 11 and Hagerty is No. 22.

Seniors Karishma Ortiz (10.9 ppg.) and Channing Warren (9.3 ppg.) are among top players for Timber Creek. Warren also averages 5.5 rebounds per game.

Hagerty’s Kylee Kitts has averaged 24.5 points and 14.7 rebounds since the end of November. Kitts reclassified as a senior this season and committed to the University of Florida after helping Faith Christian win the 2A title last year as a sophomore.

Colonial’s top six scorers are all seniors, including Carmen Richardson (11.5 ppg), Jasmine Bocca (10) and Jasmynne Gibson (8.1).

Four district champions and four additional at-large teams per region based on FHSAA rankings advance to the quarterfinal round next Wednesday.

Back-to-back defending champion Dr. Phillips ranks No. 2 behind Colonial in 7A. Lake Highland Prep, state champs the past four years, is No. 1 in 4A.

Both teams are expected to coast to district titles Friday night.

Central Florida Christian Academy was the first area team to be crowned district champion, albeit by default. The Eagles, No. 2 in 2A, had been joined in a district by Faith Christian and Orlando Christian Prep, but those schools did not have teams this season.

Admission to district games is $8 at the GoFan website. Check with participating schools for location and start times.
