Martellaro most improved at Butte Creek

- Ed Anderson

The Butte Creek Women’s

Golf Club held its annual Christmas brunch and awards ceremony last week.

Susan Martellaro was named Most Improved Player of the Year and was presented an engraved crystal bowl for her accomplishment. Martellaro dropped her index 6.5 strokes during the year.

Other members garnering some awards for their efforts throughout the year were: Medallion Day flight one: Joye Smith; flight two, Joan Bequette. Most birdies: Vicki Ellcessor with 12. Most chip in’s: Jeanie Lowe with 5.

A highlight of the event was the attendance of Evelyn Hayes. Hayes was a former club member, women’s club captain, and will turn an even 100 years old (or should I say young) in March. Awesome.

The Butte Creek Women’s

Golf Club counted one best ball net score on the par 4 holes, and

two best net scores on the par 3 and par 5 holes for its weekly game.

Taking first was the team of Karla Dreiss, Paula Rich and a blind draw with a score of 103. The team of Jeanie Lowe, Yumiko Hankins and

Sue Bechtol took second at 109. Rounding out the payoff spots with a score of 108 was the team of Sandy Fortino, Marilyn Brownfield and Darlene Thomasson.

Canyon Oaks CC

The Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club played a game of “TOE”, counting only the holes beginning with those letters and subtracting one-half of the player’s handicap.

First flight low gross: Shelley Carney, 83 (is there an echo in here?). Low net: Evie Spring, 70. First flight game: 1, Vickie Spelts, 34.5; 2, Carney, 35; 3, Spring, 35.5; 4, Nancy Vieira, 36.5. Second flight low gross and low net: Pat Radisich, 102/72. Game: 1, Joan Wagoner, 35.5; 2, Bonnie Seely, 36.5; 3, Radisich, 38; 4, Melinda Self; 38.5. Closest to pin on No. 14: 1, Linda Arellano; 2, Cynthia Paulo; 3, Pam Coleman.

Bidwell Park GC

Kelly MacKinnon was low gross in the first flight, shooting an 83 (yes, there is an echo) in the Bidwell Park Women’s Golf Club monthly propoints tournament.

First flight low net: 1, tie, Lilia Crawford and Shelia McMurphy, 66; 2, tie, Betty Linzy and Gayle Alyward, 69. Second flight low gross: tie, Nancy Jensen and Barbara Albers, 96. Table Mountain GC

Tracie Cvitkovich lit it up again in the Table Mountain Women’s Golf Club medal play tournament with a six-over-par score of 78 to garner the low gross round on the day.

Liz Coleman also had a great round, shooting 10 under her handicap, for a net 62 to win low net.

First flight: 1, Elisa Senko, 71; 2, Janett Ott,

74; 3, Sally Stemen, 77.

Second flight: 1, Christl Yates, 71, card-off; 2, Betty Horton, 71; 3, Dana Blanton, 76. Third flight: 1, Pam Eaton, 75, card-off; 2, Karen Scurlock, 75; 3, Mary Haloski, 80. Closest to the pin on No. 7: Stemen.

Spectacular shots

Lilia Crawford eagled the par 5, 14th hole at Bidwell during the ladies day tournament last week.

Crawford achieved her first career eagle with a pitching wedge approach shot from 50-yards out, as attested by her playing companions, Betty Linzy and Wendy Donahoo. Crawford’s eagle three on her scorecard (maybe for a net one, but at least a net two) was no doubt a big factor in her tying for low net in the first flight with a score of 66.
