Scholarships benefit young, local players
Two very worthwhile scholarships that are available to young players in our community are the George Maderos Junior Golf Scholarship and the Elsie McLean Women’s Golf Memorial Scholarship.
The Elsie McLean scholarship was established in honor of Elsie in order to perpetuate her legacy for her lifelong passion for golf and the Chico State Women’s Golf program. A $1,000 scholarship is presented each year to provide financial assistance to a female player who demonstrates an understanding of, a commitment to, and a respect for the game of golf. McLean has the distinction of being the oldest women player to score a hole-inone, at 102 years of age. Contributions can be made to: Chico State Fund-0999, California State University, Chico, 400 W. The George Maderos scholarship was established by Debbie
Maderos in honor of her husband, George, and to support junior golf in the Chico area.
The COVID-19 crisis this past year led to the cancellation of the annual golf tournament and several other fund raising endeavors, which enhance the fund overseen by the North Valley Community Foundation. The George Maderos scholarship fund, in collaboration with Grant Hornbeak, has provided assistance with entry fees for junior tournaments, held primarily in the Sacramento area. Chico native George Maderos was considered by many, including me, to have been the best allaround athlete to ever come from Chico, and his character was par excellence
Butte Creek Country Club
Debbie Maderos shot a stellar round of 75 for a net 66 to lap the field and take first in the first flight of the Butte Creek Women’s Golf Club Goodie Gift Exchange Tournament last week.
Sheila McMurphy was second with a net 78. Val Gregory also shot a great round of 89 to win the second flight with a net score of 70. Paula Rich took second at 74. Suzy Mann shot a net 78 to win the third flight. Karen Beckman finished in the second spot with a net score of 80.
Canyon Oaks Country Club
The Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club, dressed in holiday garb (with perhaps a little cheer on the side for good measure) played a four-person scramble format for its final tournament of the year.
The scores were close over the entire field. 1, Karen Escott, Fran Wedow, Linda Harris and Sue Osterholt, 55.5; 2, Gayle Hutchinson, Ginny Wolf, Cathy Edgar and Margie Rice, 56.6; 3, Robin Smith, Sally Pearson, Gina Davis and Dorothy Cranston, 57.1. Closest to pin on No. 3: 1, Linda Arellano; 2, Rice; 3, Pam Coleman. Closest to pin on No. 14: 1, Sue Heimann; 2, Edgar; 3, Linda Alworth.
Table Mountain Golf Course
The Table Mountain Women’s Golf Club held an “Accuracy” tournament for its weekly outing. Players were penalized one point for each time their ball landed in a sand trap, penalty area, went out of bounds, or was lost.
Penalty points were also assessed for each putt over two and one for each stroke over one to get out of a bunker. The key was to minimize your penalty strokes and keep your number low.

Bidwell Park Golf Course
The Bidwell Park Women’s Golf Club held its annual holiday tournament last week. The players donated over $500 in gift cards to be presented to Catalyst Domestic Violence Services.
The team of Kelly MacKinnon and Karla Dreiss teamed up in the two-player scramble format to win low gross in the first flight with a score of 78. First flight net: 1, Jill Circo and Linda Jones, 70.2; 2, Becky Callas and Nancy Jensen, 71.8; 3, Gayle Aylward and Linda Mowell, 73.8; 4, Sheila McMurphy and Betty Linzy, 76; 5, Rachael Graham and Sandy Fortino, 76.3.
Second flight low gross was the team of Joan Patton and Barbara Albers with a score of 81. Second flight net: 1, Debi McDermont and May Gallaway, 74.2; 2, Molly Barnum and Cindy Bell, 76.9; 3, Eleanor Calvert and Susan Pease, 77.4; 4, Sue Blizman and Wendy Donahoo, 79.8; 5, Melodie Johnson and Ruth Dyer, 82.
Spectacular shots
Bryan Flicker scored a hole- on- one on the No. 3 hole at Canyon Oaks recently. Flicker selected his pitching wedge for his perfect 128-yard tee shot.
