Why recall Newsom for the right’s mistakes?
Mr. Neill lists nine problems affecting California and other areas of the United States as reasons to recall Governor Newsom.
Unfortunately, not so. Up first; Crime/Prison Overcrowding Issues & Prop. 13. Prison overcrowding (hardly unique to California) is a result of GOP tax policy. Specifically: Corporate Investment Tax Credits spent taxpayer money for corporations to buy equipment and build factories, predominantly overseas in cheaper labor markets, reducing jobs in the US, thereby increasing both crime and homelessness.
A second factor in the increase in these two blights, specifically in California, is the decreasing quality of education since the 1960s, when California’s public schools were the envy of the nation — that resulted from Proposition 13. Any sociologist will tell you quality education reduces long-term crime.
As far as Prop. 13 goes, I believe that it should be reformed, as it creates unwarranted inequities in the housing market. Why, should a family of six pay 10 times the property tax as the widower next door? Prop. 13 reduces schools’ revenues. It also keeps empty-nesters in excessively large homes in areas where jobs are plentiful, but housing is not. They’re “trapped by Prop 13.”
Here in Chico, Prop 13 elimination would allow elderly to relocate to cheaper housing
(esp. condos, w/ included maintenance), freeing-up homes for growing families, thereby opening-up rental units.
A patriot, digs below the surface, and considers the impact on society and the economy overall, not just their personal financial situation.
