Yes, Virginia, miracles happen …

- By Patricia Ballard The Rev. Patiicia Ballard is pastor of the Oroville Center for Spiritual Living.

Daily we read of the many who are now experiencing economic, mental and physical challenges. Fear builds on these challenges, increasing the stress to where it’s difficult to “think straight.” As improbable as it may seem, these burdens can be lightened, transformed even to more positive circumstances.

What we’ve learned to believe over the years is that reality is only found ‘out there.’ What we hope for is merely wishful ‘pieinthinking. On the other hand, there are many who agree that paying attention to what’s ‘out there’ is the cause of the fearful thought patterns. Then when we act out on these thoughts by verbalizing them or committing some physical act, such as hoarding for example, these actions add to the burden.

Learning to change the way we think in order to change the way to live more abundantly, happily, safely involves first and foremost getting in touch with and paying attention to our thoughts. This is done not for the purpose of judgment, rather to understand the nature of our general thinking. We’re told we all entertain approximately 6,000, or more, thoughts daily. Unfortunately, they’re the same thoughts we’ve been thinking every day for the past umpteen years. They come up unbidden — old habits. Rarely is any new thought consciously brought in and adopted into the mix.

It’s a serious challenge to introduce a new viewpoint, a new idea, a new awareness in order to consider if it’s worth the effort. Is it real? Will it work? Who can I ask and trust? How long will it take to implement?

It is only as real as you make it. Yes, it works if you work it, believe in the process. We’ve lost the habit of pausing each day to simply listen.

The “Spirit of Life,” the “Thing” Itself, all the holy names of God can always be trusted and will answer your call. It may take a while to learn Its spiritual voice. It does take patience. And only you will see how long it takes. Life doesn’t always operate on our demand, but always comes on time. Remember this: We become what we think. We become what we say. We become what we expect.

It helps to turn off the negative news, however briefly. Pay more attention to the coming birth of greater possibility, greater expectation. Yes, miracles happen, if you expect them.
