Coronaviru­s cases continue to climb

OROVILLE » A statewide jump in COVID-19 cases is also being seen in a surge in the north state which continues to grow in Butte County which is under a regional stay-at-home order until further notice.

As of Friday there had been 5,906 cases in Butte County, with 37 hospitaliz­ed, 78 dead and 792 in isolation. On Monday, those numbers reached 6,344 total cases and the death toll climbed to 83.

That means a jump of 770 cases since Tuesday, or a 7.5% overall increase in cumulative cases and the second largest surge in new cases in one week after the week of Dec. 8 through Dec. 14 (when 893 positive tests were recorded).

After 222 new cases were detected Friday, there were 111 and 105 cases detected Saturday and Sunday, respective­ly.

This increase correlates with the statewide increase reported

Monday. California now has 1,892,348 confirmed cases of COVID-19, resulting in 22,676 deaths. The number of COVID-19 related deaths increased by 0.4% from the prior day total of 22,593.

The totals Monday also reflected an impact on an outbreak in the Butte County Jail which currently has 56 positive in- custody inmate COVID-19 cases. The jail also has 44 inmate COVID-19 tests pending, of 1,050 total inmate tests.

Butte County Sheriff’s Office has conducted 308 tests on staff members. There have been a total of 22 staff cases of COVID-19 to- date, 17 of which have recovered and returned to work.

Hospitals

A total of 775 remain in isolation, but among those, the total hospitaliz­ed dropped to 35.

There are nine positive COVID-19 patients in the county’s ICU beds, according to the state’s official dashboard. A total of eight ICU beds are available in the county, an increase by three since Friday. In Chico, state data shows 50 COVID-19 positive patients at Enloe Medical Center, while Oroville Hospital holds 33 and Orchard Hospital in Gridley has five.

So far, the most cases have been found in the 18-24 age group, totaling 1,874 non-fatal cases as of Monday. Chico remains the most affected area with 3,622 cases found since March followed by Oroville at 1,597 cumulative cases.
