ONE KILLED IN CHICO SHOOTING
Nord Avenue closed for several hours as police investigate; businesses evacuated
One person died from gunshot wounds in a shooting that occurred Tuesday night near West Third Street and Walnut Avenue and led to the intersection of West Sacramento and Nord avenues.
The Chico Police Department responded to the shooting at approximately 6:51 p.m., and minutes later located a deceased person who had been wounded in a vehicle, according to radio dispatches.
Officers investigated the shooting at West Third Street and Walnut Avenue, where a silver Mercedes coupe appeared to have crashed into the curb in front of the 7-Eleven. At least one body was near the car at that location.
Police had two people detained at the western intersection of West Sacramento and Nord avenues, but it was unclear what their involvement was in the shooting. One in handcuffs in the back of a Chico police vehicle was taken to another police vehicle and driven away from the scene. Several businesses in the area were evacuated as police searched for suspects.
Caution tape wrapped around a stretch of West Sacramento and Nord avenues, including a Chevron gas station, with the Wildcat Crossing apartments in the background. A crowd of onlookers watched from the sidewalk nearest to the Safeway parking lot across from Nord Avenue, which was closed to vehicle traffic for several hours.
As many as 12 Chico Police Department vehicles were on the scene while officers and others with the department’s Violence Suppression Unit gathered evidence from a black Hyundai sedan, which had its driver’s side door and trunk open.
The Chico Police Department did not comment on the shooting by press deadline.
The California Highway Patrol and Butte County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the crime scenes.
