Chico woman suspected of Post Office burglary
DURHAM » A Chico woman has been arrested in connection with a burglary that occurred on the night of Aug. 12 at the Durham Post Office, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
Approximately 100 post office boxes at the 2396 Durham Dayton Highway location were found pried open with large amounts of mail stolen.
During a subsequent investigation among BCSO detectives and designated area deputies, they located a person whose P.O. box was broken into and stated his or her business bank account information had been stolen.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Carolyn Hill, 44, of Chico, was identified as a suspect and detectives located evidence ind i c a t i n g Hill forged checks usi n g the a forementioned person’s business bank account info. Detectives said the forged checks were used to steal a large sum of money from the business based on evidence they found.
Detectives made contact with Hill on Monday, Jan. 4 regarding the investigation. During the contact, detectives said they found evidence pointing to Hill as the person responsible for the burglary at the Durham Post Office, as well as stealing money from the business bank account.
Hill was then booked into the Butte County Jail on suspicion of burglary, forgery, identity thef t, grand theft and passing fraudulent checks. Hill is scheduled to be arraigned at 3 p. m. Wednesday at the Butte County Superior Court. The Sheriff’s Office asks anyone with additional information on the investigation to contact detectives at 530-538-7671.
This is the latest arrest made in a number of separate post office burglaries that occurred in Butte County over the past year.
Jeremy Elguez, 32, of Chico, was arrested and later pleaded guilty on Aug. 4, 2020, for burglarizing 10 post offices across five counties, including Butte County post offices in Bangor and Stirling City, between Aug. 23, 2019, and March 1, 2020.
Also on Aug. 4, 2020, Mayra Jimenez, 25, of Tracy, and Jonathan Dew, 26, of Vacaville, were arrested in Sacramento after BCSO detectives obtained an arrest warrant for each of them on suspicion of burglarizing the Bangor Post Office on June 12.
