New year is off to a roaring start Conservatism — I can’t wait

-

Here we are, well into

2021. So, Happy New Year! Or maybe, “better” new year! OK, then, how about “sensible” new year?

All right, let’s try this one: “Somehow, we get through it” new year!

(C’mon, 2021, don’t make us grovel. We’ve already had a pretty rough time.)

— Laurie Fulton, Oroville

Chico now has a majority conservative City Council. No doubt that they will provide similar exemplary government as IQ45 continues to exhibit in his last weeks; wrench-inthe-works, that is. Pandemic: No mention. Millions out of work, facing eviction: No mention. Largest ever cyber-attack on our government’s computer networks by Russia: No mention.

By way of parallel, we have our new city council. Potholed & unmarked roadways: No mention. Piles of leaves in the streets waiting for the first good storm to block all the grates and flood all the streets (a nearly annual event): No action. Just like our do-nothing Senate who refuses to bring bills to the floor for votes, our city council ignores staffing for obvious tangible problems in favor of pissing-away any surplus on more police to pay back the wealthy North Chico homeowners whose PAC bankrolled their election, and rousting the unhoused, risking a major civil suit.

Their ignorant actions will cost the city millions both in payroll, benefits and retirement, as well as potential civil suit penalties. The City Attorney should immediately evaluate ways to indemnify the city against any such penalty and hold only the conservative majority and their backing-PAC solely responsible for any penalty awarded in such a case. As a starter step, I ask the attorney to generate a document for each of them to sign, acknowledging that their actions are risking such a civil suit, and that they assume complete financial responsibility for legal representation and any penalty awarded.
