‘Cancel culture’ is a GOP myth

- — Al Lenzi, Chico

The D. Seuss Estate on its own removed six books from the market containing material that could be interpreted as “hurtful and wrong”; 44 still remain available. Hasbro itself dropped the “Mr.” from “Mr. Potato Head” to “promote gender and inclusion.” Democrats had nothing to do with this.

But since they offer no policies of their own on important issues such as COVID relief, health care, voter rights or civil rights, Republicans have to create issues. “Cancel culture” is a Republican created label and misnomer. Democrats do not want to limit anyone’s right to free speech, anymore than we’d tolerate limits on our own. We just ask people to keep their speech civil, nonracist and honest.

The next time Republicans get in your face with these and other issues, ask them to name any policy since WWII Republicans enacted that benefited the poor or middle class. The only one I can recall is the Interstate Highway Act in the ’50s. All they do is gaslight and block important legislation to help the average American such as COVID relief, voter rights and civil rights. And cutting taxes, which primarily benefits the rich does not count. My middle class taxes increased under both Reagan and Trump because for a few percentage points of tax, they took away or limited middle class deductions such as the personal interest deduction, income averaging, and by limiting the state and local tax deduction (which was aimed directly at the blue states of California and New York).
