Chico police officer hurt in arrest attempt

- By Rick Silva rsilva@paradisepost.com

A Chico police officer was injured late Friday night after police responded to a party complaint at La Vista Verde Apartments, where police said they were met with “a large unruly crowd.”

Police say that when two officers tried detaining Tony Alvarado21, in the parking lot he resisted and ran from them.

While they were struggling with Alvarado-Tafoya, one of the officers sustained a fractured leg and dislocated ankle. The officer was transported via ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

As additional officers arrived, police say the suspect was seen fleeing into a neighboring apartment. They also allege that prior to the struggle they learned that Alvarado-Tafoya had a 9mm Glock style “ghost gun” loaded with a high

capacity magazine.

Police say that AlvaradoTafoya tried jumping out of a second-story window in an attempt to escape. Police say that he broke his foot after the jump and was detained without further incident. He fractured his foot during the fall.

Alvarado-Tafoya was treated at Enloe Medical Center and after he was medically cleared for incarceration, he was booked into the Butte County Jail for allegedly resisting a peace officer causing serious bodily injury, carrying a concealed firearm, assembling a ghost gun, possession of a high capacity magazine, carrying a loaded firearm in public, and resisting or delaying a peace officer.

Man arrested after allegedly fighting with officers

A couple of hours before the La Vista Verde Apartments incident, police say they arrested a man who fought with them.

Police say that at about 9:24 p.m., they contacted a disorderly subject in a vehicle parked on Lupin Avenue at E. Eaton Road.

Officers said that when they contacted the man, Todd Garnett, 51, he exited his vehicle and took a fighting stance toward them. Police allege that he appeared to be under the influence of a central nervous system stimulant. Police said that when the two officers on scene attempted to detain Garnett, he kicked one of the officers and was eventually detained in handcuffs.

Police say that despite being in handcuffs he continued to fight the officers. That’s when officers requested a full-body restraint device (the WRAP), which is used to prevent injuries to officers and suspects.

Garnett was transported to Enloe Medical Center for a medical evaluation and was later booked into the Butte County Jail on allegations of criminal threats, resisting arrest with force and assault on a police officer. None of the officers were seriously injured in this incident.
