Republicans heading for a shipwreck
A Grateful Dead song, “Ship of Fools” comes to mind when thinking of the Republican Congress, floundering on the seas of lies and conspiracies, then shipwrecking on the shores of truth and reality.
At the recent CPAC Ted Cruz (R-TX) proclaimed, to great applause, “The Republican Party is not the country club party but the party of hardworking, blue- collar men and women.” If that’s the case then why did 100% of Republicans in Congress vote against financial relief for those same “workers” victimized by COVID-19?
Senator Ron Johnson ( R-WI) was shocked to hear disparaging remarks about the rioters who stormed the U. S. Capitol, claiming them to be “people that love this country, that truly respect law enforcement”; 146 police officers were assaulted, many grievously, one murdered, 38 later testing positive for the coronavirus. Oh, and the patriotic Johnson spent the 4th of July in Moscow, along with nine other f lag waving members of the Republican congress.
On a vote in the House of Representatives to award the Capitol Police with Congressional Gold Medals, 12 Republicans voted no; 14 Republicans voted against condemnation of the coup in Myanmar.
On March 17 the House voted to reauthorize the
Violence against Women Act; 172 Republicans voted against it because of provisions dealing with gun rights; this vote came the day after seven women were gunned down in Atlanta.
As the song goes, “I won’t slave for gold and jewels, but I will slave to find a way to sink your ship of fools”.
