Friday’s football game between crosstown rivals Chico High and Pleasant Valley High won’t be considered an Almond Bowl, the two schools confirmed Monday.

Since the student bodies of both schools can’t participate, it will not be dubbed the Almond Bowl, said Pleasant Valley Athletic Director Pam Jackson.

Chico High Athletic Director Jason Alvistur also added that the limitations put on fans, students and rallies won’t make the game an Almond Bowl. Instead, Friday’s game and another scheduled contest against PV on April 30, are just two games against Pleasant Valley High.

Friday’s game will be held at Pleasant Valley’s Asgard Yard. It will kick off at 7:30 p.m.

Attendance is limited to four household contacts of players, cheerleaders and the band.

Alvistur added that this year was to mark the 50th edition of the Almond Bowl and that both schools want to save the event for the fall when possibly everyone can participate and attend.

The annual Almond Bowl car giveaway sponsored by Chico Nissan Hyandai also already took place back in February. Normally, the winner of the car raffle, a fundraiser that benefits both schools’ athletic programs, is announced at halftime of the Almond Bowl.

This year’s winner of a 2020 Nissan Sentra was Ted Klemm. A total of 8,000 tickets were sold, which raised $160,000 for the athletic programs.

Chico opened its season last Friday with a 49- 0 win over Corning. PV played its opener against Yuba City but suffered a 14-7 setback on the road.

The April 30 matchup between the two schools will be held at Chico High.
