When a loss can become a gain

-

Chico City Council rejected my proposal to change the name to Teichert Peace Ponds Park Nature Preserve, 4-3.

Although initially disappointed, I believe more was accomplished in defeat. Had the plan passed, that might have been the sum of it. My intent to express the needs for maintenance and restoration through financial commitment was expressed.

The Teichert Ponds Restoration Foundation was only able to garner about $ 10,000 in five years of existence and used mostly for information purposes. Now the need for larger funding rests with the council, city, and community.

To the council the restoration plans approved, and permits obtained in 2008 were described to the council as being “robust.” I would have said “essential” or at least “extensive.” Nature “preserve” not “area” was to create more influence. Words carry connotations.

Failure of pond separation of pond #1 from 2 and 3 didn’t fail because of the plan that called for an access road/trail between the ponds, but because of incompletion. These same plans called for separation of pond # 2 from #3. Had this been done, cattail removal would have been easier.

My desire to include “Park” in the name was to ensure the same status given other parks in Chico.

Stormwater Drain plans for Teichert Ponds had highest priority for revision when considered two years ago. No change has occurred despite increased load from developments to the east and south.

Call it what you wish, the ponds need your attention.
