LP faces Sutter after second-half loss in 2020

- By Justin Couchot jcouchot@chicoer.com

With the two Chico schools taking part of the 50th Almond Bowl on Friday at Pleasant Valley High School, Las Plumas will be hosting Sutter in week eight along with a large group of other home matchups for Butte and Glenn County teams.

Sutter (5-1, 3-0 Butte View League) and Las Plumas (3-3, 2-1 BVL) will face off at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Harrison Stadium in Oroville.

The Thunderbirds won three straight games after a week one loss to Chico High, but have lost their last two to Enterprise and Gridley and have been shut out in both matchups. Sutter lost to Foothill on Sept. 17 but has since won three straight against West

Valley, Wheatland and Gridley.

Entering the season, LP players said this game was on their calendar even more than the Victory Bell game.

In 2020, Las Plumas led Sutter 14-7 at halftime but struggled to hold onto the ball, with fumbles and turnovers costing the Thunderbirds the game. LP lost the 2020 matchup to the Huskies 35-14. It is the final year the two teams will face off in Butte View League play, as Sutter will move to Sac Joaquin Section in the 2022 season.

“I’m really looking forward to

Sutter,” said LP captain Charles Gegg, an outside linebacker and offensive guard, prior to the start of the season. “Sutter’s always the team you want to beat. They’re the champions every year and we had them 14-0 at halftime last year but we choked. I think we have a shot this year.”

Other games

After its fourth game canceled of the season last week, Paradise (4-1, 2-0 Sacramento Valley League) will look to return to the field Friday as it hosts league opponent Pierce (5-2, 3-0 SVL). Kickoff between the two teams is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Paradise.

The Bobcats have won four straight after opening their season with a loss to Enterprise, most recently defeating East Nicolaus

27-7 on Oct. 8.

Gridley (3-3, 2-1 BVL) will play host to Wheatland (3-5, 2-1 BVL), Durham (4-3, 2-2 SVL) will host East Nicolaus (2-4, 2-2 SVL), Willows (3-3, 2-0 Mid-Valley League) will host Williams (5-2, 2-0 MVL), and Biggs (3-2, 1-2 Cascade Valley League) will host Weed (1-6, 0-4 CVL). All four games are scheduled for at 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Road matchups in week eight include Oroville (0-5, 0-2 BVL) seeking its first win in West Valley (1-6, 1-3 BVL), Orland (5-2, 1-1 Northern Athletic League) playing in Anderson (4-2, 0-2 NAL) and Hamilton (2-4, 0-2 MVL) traveling to Modoc (4-2, 1-1 MVL). All three road games will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
