Fish report

-

LAKE OROVILLE: The lake remains out of play for all but shore fishermen or those launching kayaks into the shallow lake. A few king salmon have been taken by kayakers trolling in the main river channel, but the interest is limited to a few anglers willing to work hard for the opportunity for the occasional salmon. Bass fishing is fair from the banks with small spotted bass the rule on plastics in deep water. The launch ramp may not open once again until the lake rises in the event of precipitation in the coming months. The lake is releasing water, but it held at 22 percent. TRINITY LAKE: The lake dropped once again from 28 to 27 percent, and fewer bass fishermen are visiting the lake. Boaters are advised to launch at the Trinity Center public boat launch. AMERICAN RIVER/Sacramento: The American is running at a very low level of 646 cfs at Fair Oaks, and

it is as low as long-time residents can remember.

All launch ramps are closed with the exception of Discovery Park at the confluence with the Sacramento River. Bank fishermen are lining salmon upriver below Nimbus Dam while a few boaters are jigging P-Line’s Laser Minnows or similar spoons, trolling Silvertrons, or sitting on anchor with Brad’s Killer Fish at the mouth near Discovery Park. AMERICAN RIVER/Above

Folsom: The flows are very low, and the American River watershed above Folsom Dam is closed to bait fishing on September 30. Only catch/release with artificials on barbless hooks are allowed until the week prior to Memorial Day. This is applicable in all waters of the American River watershed above the dam.

FEATHER RIVER: There was a good push of salmon early in the week and it was shoulder to shoulder at the 5th street bridge. Numbers are still a bit inconsistent but are improving, around Boyd’s Pump and Gridley. There were some good numbers taken from the Outlet Hole. The flows at Gridley are steady at 1200 cfs. SACRAMENTO RIVER,

Red Bluff to Chico: It was a tough week with high winds and fluctuating numbers of fish. Salmon numbers are still high, but have tapered off. Fish quality OK with older fish in the mix. Water levels at the Colusa Bridge down from 5005- 4947 cfs. SACRAMENTO RIVER,

Metro area: Salmon action has been hit or miss, but the opportunity for a chrome salmon is available for those trolling Brad’s Cut Plugs behind an 11-inch Pro Troll Dodger or Silvertron Spinners. A half-dozen salmon are landed on a daily basis around the mouth of the American at Discovery Park. Strong winds kept most anglers off the water at the start of the week, and the salmon were spread out, forcing anglers had to cover a lot of water for the fish that were taken. The flows continue to drop at Freeport.

LAKE SHASTA: The water level is low but there is plenty of fishable water to support the Shasta Cascade Bass Anglers Tournament this coming weekend out of Bridge Bay Resort and Marina. This is the first of multiple tournaments at the lake over the next three months. Bass fishing remains been good, there have been plenty of shad in the water, and the Pit, McCloud, and Squaw Arms have been fishing well and there should be some quality limits. The lake has dropped to 22 percent of capacity, and Bridge Bay is one of the only launch ramps available.

The weekly fishing report, compiled by Western Outdoor News, highlights the best angling opportunities in the north state.
