Eighty players showed up to participate in the annual Butte Creek Women’s Golf Club Open “Guest Day and Friends on the Fairway” Tournament, open meaning that you can bring your own team to the tournament, and do not need to have a host club member on your team.

First flight: 1, Jeanie Lowe, Sherry Sue, Sherian Hornbeak and Loretha Hannah, 120; 2, Vickie Ellcessor, Sally Pearson, Susie Westcott and Shelley Carney, 123; 3, tie, Barbara Joronen, Gail Johnson, Darlene Thomasson and Linda Scarff, along with the team of Janet Alves, Karen Beckman, Pat Stephenson and Lynn Bottini, and the team of Joye Smith, Jennifer O’Donoghue, Yumiko Hankins and Betty Linzy at 125.

Second flight: 1, Pam Miller, Pam Sorenson, Arlene Cary and Yvonne Stanton, 121; 2, Yvonne Ricker, Diane Welty, Kayla Morgan and Janice Cary, 122; 3, Sherry Cole, Glenda Rutherglen, Patricia Teel and Grace Melton, 127.

Kevin Milliken, Ray Parker and Jim Westcott led the field in the recent Butte Creek Senior Men’s Golf Club ABC Blind Draw, Two Best-Ball format tournament, with a team net score of 137. Taking second was the team of Randy Holt, Don Krysakowski and a blind draw at 139. Rounding out the payoff spots for third place was the team of Jim Gaumer, Rovane Younger and Carl Martellaro at 142. The team of Royal Hawkley, Dave Harrison and Jeff Day took low gross honors with a score of 145.

Bidwell Park Golf Course

The Bidwell Women’s Golf Club decided to lighten the load in its members’ golf bags and restricted play to the use of just three clubs and a putter for its weekly game.

First flight low gross: Sheila McMurphy, 92. Low net: Debi McDermont, 73. Second flight low gross: Eleanor Calvert, 101. Low net: Cheryl Vermillion, 80. Third flight low gross: Molly Barnum, 109. Low net: 1, Eileen Brownell, 71; 2, tie, Rachael Graham and Liz Mosher, 79. Closest to pin on No. 12: 1, McMurphy; 2, Mary Beck; 3, McDermont.

FYI: The names of the various teams in the recent Bidwell Women’s Club Invitational were named after types of tea. Curiosity killed the cat, but at least now we know.

The results were not available for the recent four-player money ball tournament, held at Bidwell last week, in time to make this edition of the golf column. Maybe next week.

Table Mountain GC

The Table Mountain Women’s Golf Club selected the best nine holes for its weekly game, subtracting one half a player’s handicap for the net score. Deb Miller was low gross on the day with a score of 84. Mary Haloski won overall low net with a two-under par score of 70.

First flight game: 1, Janett Ott, 27.5; 2, Deb Lerner, 29, card-off; 3, Traci Cvitkovich, 29. Second flight: 1, Leslie Vermillion 27.5; 2, Jody Thompson, 29; 3, Karen Scurlock 31. Closest to the pin on No. 7: Vermillion.

Junior golf

Several junior players traveled to the Sacramento area a week ago to participate in a U.S. Kids and Junior Tour of Northern California sanctioned tournaments. Six-year-old Livy Woodward, participating in the 8 and under age division, finished sixth. Sevenyear-old Alex Banks, also finished sixth in his age bracket at Haggin Oaks GC.

Other local junior players participated in the JTNC event at the Yolo Fliers GC, finishing as follows: Tommy Ma, T39 (tied for 39th); Andrew Ma, 30th; Morgan Pittman, T30; Amy Na, T13; Nyunhu Na, T16.

It’s amazing how these young players can find the time to travel out of town to participate in golf tournaments on weekends and do so well both golfwise and academically. I, on the other hand, was usually getting into trouble on weekends. What a difference 75-80 years makes, just saying.

Team Play League

The current standings in the Women’s Team Play League competition is as follows: 1. Canyon Oaks; 2, Butte Creek; 3, Bidwell; 4, Table Mountain; 5, Peach Tree; 6, Wilcox Oaks. There are many matches left to play throughout the coming months.

Spectacular shots

Dave Smith achieved his first career hole-in-one at Butte Creek recently. Smith hit a perfect, 145yard, 6-iron tee shot into the cup, as attested by Joanne Rutledge.

Evan Bacon aced the 4th hole at Bidwell last week in the company of Rich Evans, Aaron Bacon and Jordan Maloney. Bacon selected his 8-iron for a perfect 140-yard tee shot. COMMENTARY » I’m in St. George, Utah this week with the Chico Traveling Couples Golf Group for a week of golf and sightseeing, unfortunately, without its Guru and chief organizer, Ted Blofsky, who is on the mend. Get well, Ted, we miss your expertise and guidance.
