Praise to teachers for field trips
You may have seen the streets of Chico last week filled with 10-year-olds in bright-colored T-shirts. This endeavor is the brainchild of two brave, energetic teachers at Citrus Elementary, who found a way for their students to experience field trips, even after the traditional environmental camp became unfeasible.
Throughout the year, and especially during
Bike Week in May, the students travel around town and learn about local history, flora and fauna, and what’s in store for them at Junior High and High School. Mr. Bransky and Mr. Wion have procured not just bikes, but helmets, Tshirts and backpacks for every student, and instilled in them not just bike safety, but the fact that they are ambassadors for Citrus Elementary, and kids in general. Last week began with a ride to the Sacramento River and lessons about riparian habitat from River Partners, included stops at Chico Jr and Chico High where they experienced everything from chemistry to anatomy to art to robotics, helped by the students in those classes (who worked benevolently with the younger students), and ended with a challenge ride to Diversion Dam in Upper Park, where the emphasis was on encouraging fellow students who might struggle up the road.
We surely all remember the field trips of our youth, because one way or another, they are intense learning experiences. I’m amazed that Mr. Ray Bransky and Mr. Nathaniel Wion go to the tremendous effort of creating these experiences for their students. Bravo!
