Chico’s field hockey team outlasts Corning for victory in EAL match

The Chico High field hockey team defeated Corning 4-3 in an Eastern Athletic League match Wednesday night at Panther Stadium in Chico.

Grace Kizarian got the first goal of the game for Chico on an assist from Fiona Nielsen and Corning soon tied the game at 1-1. Chico took a 2-1 lead late in the first quarter, when Isabella Valle-Snyder battled through the Corning defense and found Stella Shern for the goal. Despite Chico’s attack remaining strong, Corning tied the game at 2-2 just before halftime.

At the start of the third quarter the Panthers capitalize­d on a short corner. JoJo Bishop passed to Morgan Porter for the goal. Chico held the 3-2 lead until halfway through the fourth quarter when Corning once again tied the game.

With 4 minutes left in the game, Valle-Snyder got her second assist of the game on a pass to Portia Downey for the goal.

Chico goalkeeper­s Madisia Wathen and Hillary Roady split time in the cage. Wathen recorded one save and Roady recorded two saves, as the Panthers outshot Corning 54-18.

Chico (8-4, 7-1 EAL) plays next at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Red Bluff, before hosting Pleasant Valley at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 21 to close out its regular season schedule.

CHICO VS. PLEASANT VALLEY >> The Chico girls defeated Pleasant Valley 13134 and the Chico boys beat Pleasant Valley 134-31.

For the girls, Jane Hull won the 50-meter freestyle in 27.53 seconds; Brooke Javor won the 100-meter freestyle in 1:06, and Emma Upton won the 200-meter freestyle in 2:10.62 and the 500-meter freestyle in 5:48.22. The team of Upton, Sylvie Zivnuska, Claire Kay and Hull won the 200-meter freestyle relay in 1:13.57. Kay won the 100-meter butterfly 1:06, Audrey Vierra won the 100-meter breast

stroke in 1:14.21 and Javor won the 100-meter backstroke in 1:05.27.

The team of Javor, Zivnuska, Vierra and Bartell won the 200-meter medley relay in 2:01.69.

For the boys, Theron Clark won the 50-meter freestyle in 23:79 seconds; Dillan Perry won the 100-meter freestyle in 50.55 seconds; Zander Krok won the 200-meter freestyle in 1:54.91, and Mason Winzenz won the 500-meter freestyle in 5:06.86. The team of Jonas Bourne, Devin Cheng, Clark and Solar Parry won the 200-meter freestyle relay in 1:45.65, and the team of Cheng,

Krok, Perry and Winzenz won the 400-meter freestyle relay in 3:31.24.

Krok won the 100-meter butterfly in 0:56.87, Bourne won the 100-meter backstroke in 0:59.86, Perry won the 100-meter breaststro­ke in 1:06.79 and Parry won the 200-meter individual medley in 2:15.6.

In the 200-meter medley relay the team of Bourne, Perry, Krok and Winzenz won in 1:45.22.
