-

Ronald Leon Schroll passed away on September 12th, 2023 at the age of 97. Ronnie was born on May 19, 1926 in Rochester, New York, the son of Florence and Edgar Schroll. He entered the army at the age of 18 and served in the Philippines in WWII. The GI Bill enabled him to attend college and then graduate school after the war. He attended several educational institutions including Champlain College in Plattsburgh, NY (formerly part of the NY state college system), Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, and Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. On February 3, 1951, Ronnie married Elizabeth (Betty) McIntyre. For a few years, they lived in Ausable Forks, New York where Ronnie began his career as an educator. At that time he was the sole high school science teacher.

They then settled in Saranac Lake, New York where Ronnie taught chemistry at the Saranac Lake High School and astronomy at the local community college. He was a beloved teacher who used humor to put students at ease, recognizing that the sciences were anxiety-provoking for many. He was known for starting class with a picture puzzle or a play on words. Ronnie and Betty raised three daughters. They enjoyed their many years living in the Adirondack Mountains, hiking, canoeing, and skiing. Once retired, Ronnie and Betty traveled extensively. For many years they lived in Carlsbad, New Mexico where they hiked, golfed, played pool, and made many friends. Eventually, they moved to Chico, California to be closer to their daughters Allison and Aldebra.

Ronnie is survived by his wife Betty, his daughters and son-in-laws Alayne Schroll & Russ Campbell, Allison Schroll & Jon Picou, and Aldebra Schroll & Craig Buschner, his grandchildren Jordan Layman, Kalyn and Saryn Campbell, and his greatgranddaughter Fay Campbell.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation in his name to the Adirondack Mountain Club kids outdoor education program: www.adk.org.
