Trevino to join Favre in Madison
Expect jokes and good-natured jabs — as well as golf balls — to fly when Lee Trevino joins Brett Favre, Derek Jeter and Andy North in a celebrity foursome June 23 at the American Family Insurance Championship.
The celebrity foursome has quickly become one of the most popular features of the PGA Tour Champions event. The third annual AmFam Championship will be held June 22-24 at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
The foursome will play a ninehole exhibition at approximately 1:30 p.m., following the final group of tournament players on the 10th hole.
Favre, Jeter and North previously were announced as participants.
Trevino, 78, won 29 times on the PGA Tour, including six major championships, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1981. He joined the Champions tour in 1989 and was a major contributor to its early success with 29 victories, still the third-highest total.
Trevino was a fan favorite at every tournament stop including Milwaukee, where he lost a memorable eight-hole playoff to Lee Elder in the 1978 Greater Milwaukee Open. He also tied for second in 1979.
Known for his shot-making ability and rapid-fire wit, Trevino is sure to keep the gallery laughing when he teams with Jeter to play a nine-hole scramble against Favre and North. The American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation will make a $25,000 donation to American Family Children’s Hospital on behalf of the winning team.
“Lee Trevino is one of a kind, whose story of determination, humor and love for the game of golf and fans fits perfectly with our championship,” tournament director Nate Pokrass said in a statement.
