Rodgers shows up in mask form in ‘Freaky ’ movie

- Kendra Meinert

Hey, look! It’s Aaron Rodgers on the big screen with Vince Vaughn in a horror movie — kind of.

The Green Bay Packers quarterback shows up as a mask in “Freaky,” the body-switching slasher comedy that opened in theaters on Friday (the 13th).

When a high school teen (Kathryn Newton) wakes up in the body of a serial killer known as the Blissfield Butcher (Vaughn), she resorts to a mask to hide her identity in public. It happens to be a Rodgers mask and, of course, there’s a story behind that.

Director Christopher Landon (”Happy Death Day,” “Happy Death Day 2U”) told The Wrap his first choice for a “Freaky” celebrity mask was John Goodman, but “The Conners” actor declined to give permission.

“We were faced with the abyss with who (to use). There’s so many weird ways you can go. And then I realized a sports figure would be beneficial to the story,” Landon told The Wrap. “I don’t want to spoil anything but there’s a moment at the end of the movie where there’s a payoff with the mask. So it made sense that we find someone who was a really well-known sports figure — and Aaron Rodgers was the guy. He’s famous enough, well-known enough and liked enough … and I heard that he has a sense of humor. So we were able to reach him through my agency and he said yes.”

You can get a peek at the mask in the trailer for “Freaky,” and if you’re thinking it’s something of a silicone stretch that it looks like a ringer for Rodgers, that’s the whole point. Landon didn’t want it to be perfect — more like a bad version in a good way.

“It’s kind of like going to Madame Tussauds (wax

museum). ... It kind of looks like them but there’s something off,” he said in TheWrap interview.

Landon said he’s “dying for Aaron to see the movie and hear what he has to say.”

“Freaky” is rated R and is showing at select Marcus Theatres locations across Wisconsin. It’s scheduled to be available for purchase on video on demand on Nov. 30.

It has been getting mostly favorable reviews and has an 84% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
