Town takes next step in siren project
PARADISE » The Paradise Town Council voted 5- 0 on Tuesday night to approve a multi-layered/redundant Emergency Notification System.
The siren system by Genasys Inc., will be installed at 21 sites, including some that may be schools.
The system will cost between $ 2.4 million and $2.9 million to install and will be paid for by the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. It should also be compatible with the county.
The decision to do so has been widely supported by residents as the town says 89% of residents surveyed said an early warning system would make them feel safer living in Paradise, and 80% indicated they would prefer a siren which also included a voice message with emergency information.
The system will include a siren and has the capacity for dozens of different tones and messages that can be sent out on the siren sites.
But it won’t be the only way to warn residents, the town will keep its Code Red and will continue to use Facebook and the town website.
Sirens in law enforcement cars will also be utilized as well as the potential for door- to- door checks.
The 21 potential sites are all on properties owned by the Town of Paradise or other public agencies such as Paradise Unified School District, Paradise Irrigation District, Feather River Hospital and Paradise Recreation & Parks District.
According to the agenda finalizing the siren locations and formalizing agreements with any public agencies whose properties are selected for construction will occur during the next phase of the project.
