Comedy: Daughters scheme to wed

- By Verda Mackay

PARADISE » Theatre On the Ridge has successfully weathered another heavy rain storm. A romantic comedy, “The Shoemaker’s Daughters,” is a perfect treat for the entire family. It opens Nov. 11 and runs through Dec. 5 with no performances Thanksgiving weekend.

This original comedy, written and directed by Jerry Miller, is inspired by the Charles Laughton film, “Hobson’s Choice,” which won many awards.

Miller gave a short summary of the play’s program.

“This is about three daughters that scheme to thwart their father’s plans to marry them off to his drinking buddies. The play takes place in swinging London circa 1960s. All three daughters have their own ideas for husbands, and the plot to teach their tyrannical father a lesson hits a few snags along the way.”

Bruce Dillman plays the role of the father, Henry Hobson. His three daughters are portrayed by Marina Kalani (Georgina), Brooke Sundahl ( Petula) and Alisa Tousey ( Lulu). Others in this memorable cast include Steve Jungen (John), Gabriel Suddeth ( Ryan), Owen Hansen ( Tulsa), Teresa Miller ( Maggie) and Erika Soerensen ( Fanny).

“The Shoemaker ’ s Daughters” tells the comedic story of the autocratic proprietor of a moderately upmarket boot shop. A widower, Hobson is a notorious miser, drinker and woman- hater with three grown daughters. All three have kept house and worked in their father’s shop for years without wages, but are eager to marry. What happens with their independent desires and how they try to resolve them makes a terrific comedy.

Theatre On the Ridge’s Executive Director Judy Clemens said, “We have had lots of people helping to clean the theater after the rain storm. This is a large cast and a delightful show. We’re looking forward to ending 2021 on a happy, upbeat note!”

Tickets for this show are available online only at http://www.totr.org. Online ticket prices are $16 reserved, $12 general, bargain tickets for $10 at the door only are available on Thursday nights and Sunday matinees.
