Traditional Spanish Market and Contemporary Hispanic Market
Bultos, retablos, straw appliqué, tinwork, furniture, and colcha embroidery are just some of the traditional arts featured at the 64th Annual Traditional Spanish Market, sponsored by the Spanish Colonial Arts Society. The market showcases the handmade arts and crafts of more than 200 adult and youth artists who work with traditional, colonial-era techniques and materials. The event takes place on Santa Fe’s Plaza and surrounding streets on Saturday, July 25, and Sunday, July 26, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m, following a market preview on Friday, July 24, at the Eldorado Hotel and Spa (309 W. San Francisco St.). The preview begins at 5 p.m. with a collector’s hour for $80, followed by a public viewing at 6 p.m. for $20. Tickets are available in advance by calling 505-982-2226 and can be purchased at the door. The market on Saturday and Sunday is open to the public at no cost.
Related events include a lecture and concert with the Chicago Arts Orchestra at the Eldorado Hotel at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 24 ($30 at the door). James Campbell Caruso, chef/owner of La Boca and Taberna, leads a class on Spanish cuisine at the Santa Fe School of Cooking (125 N. Guadalupe St.) on Saturday. On Saturday evening, mezzo soprano Drea Pressley and Grammy-nominated guitarist Richard Savina present Cantigas d’Amigo: A Spanish and Celtic Tapestry of Song. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church (208 Grant Ave.). Tickets cost $20 and are available at the door or online at www.dreapressley.brownpapertickets.com.
