THIS CAN BE A SUBTLY TRICKY WEEK, as astrological influences leave us feeling competent, yet emotionally mushy underneath. We are more organized and can get some work done as Mercury joins the sun and Pluto in competent Capricorn. But it’s hard to get our heart into the task at hand, and we may feel mopey or easily discouraged as the emotional planets, Venus and Mars, slosh their way through sensitive and imaginative, if sometimes passive, Pisces, now through the end of January.

Capricorn energy encourages us to deal with everything on our plate in a competent manner. People who feel clear about their goals and supported by their friends and family can gallop ahead. Those with fuzzier goals, or who are processing grief, loss, or confusion, may feel at a loss for the next step.

We can make good use of this Piscean sensitivity if we can find a safe place and find beauty — and let it fill our hearts so we can step forward.

Delays may turn out to be fortuitous. We can expect considerable frustrations toward the end of the week as activating Mars squares serious Saturn. We may feel the tension between generations and between liberal and conservative viewpoints. But we have an opportunity to hammer out some deeper understanding.

Friday begins in an emotional haze. On Saturday, the moon forms a grand trine with Saturn and Uranus and brings bombast to the headlines; we need to be able to laugh at our own pronouncements. Sunday and early into next week, we grow more industrious as the Virgo moon amps up Capricorn.

Midweek, a series of changes and adjustments requires honesty rather than reaction as the Libra moon squares Mercury, Pluto, and Uranus. A moment of despair can motivate us out of our comfort zone. The energy shifts on Thursday as the sun and moon enter stubborn fixed signs. Walk around obstacles rather than run headlong into them.

FRIDAY, JAN. 13: The mood is blustery and inconsistent, warm but frustrating. People need to express themselves, but we don’t need to agree with them. It is gratifying to find a place of ease — let our minds dwell there.

SATURDAY, JAN. 14: Let’s nourish connections as the sociable Leo moon trines Uranus all day. Tonight the moon enters reserved Virgo, and cozy personal time suddenly sounds like a good idea. We need thoughtful conversation.

SUNDAY, JAN. 15: Our minds suddenly catalog all the personal and social work we have been postponing for the last couple of months as the industrious Virgo moon opposes Neptune and Venus. Make lists now, organize, and then let your mind rest.

MONDAY, JAN. 16: Illusions begin to fall, and tough realities cause us to worry. If so, let’s stay in the present, assess honestly the new situation, and make a plan. Anxiety can come out in sharp edges midday as the moon opposes Mars and squares Saturn unless we stay focused on solutions.

TUESDAY, JAN. 17: We take a more tactful, human-centered approach to yesterday’s concerns. Look for opportunities for mutual support as the moon enters friendly Libra and squares thoughtful Mercury.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18: Questions of fairness and social justice echo from the breakfast table to the boardroom as the Libra moon squares Pluto and opposes Uranus. We need to be concerned about what is fair for others.

THURSDAY, JAN. 19: It’s a day of emotional paradoxes — we long for freedom and feel frustration; we have work to do and feel passive; we may feel for the group and want to be alone as the sun enters Aquarius and the moon enters Scorpio.
