Rakuko Naito: Untitled (Black and White) 1964, oil on canvas
David Richard Gallery, 1570 -AI Pacheco St., 505-983-9555 Sizzle and Chill, an exhibition of paintings by Rakuko Naito and Tadaaki Kuwayama, continues through April 9. Born and raised in Japan, the two artists studied traditional Japanese painting before marrying and coming to New York in 1958. Both artists moved away from traditional Japanese techniques but also avoided the trend toward Abstract Expressionism popular in New York at the time, instead exploring Hard-edge optical paintings with flat planes, reductive forms, and eye-popping patterns and colors.
