Ukrainian rhapsody: DakhaBrakha
Here comes DakhaBrakha, a quartet playing a free show of some powerful world music at the Railyard Plaza (S. Guadalupe St. and Paseo de Peralta) on Saturday, June 24, at 7 p.m. The band specializes in a uniquely modernized Ukrainian folk music with driving percussion and wild vocals (sometimes reminiscent of Tom Waits, Dead Can Dance, and the B-52s) alternating with delicate instrumentals and sustained overlapping vocals. The members of DakhaBrakha describe their fusion sound — four-part singing with cello, didgeridoo, piano, garmoshka (accordion), trombone, and darbuka, djembe, and bass drums — as “ethno-chaos.” And Nina Garenetska, Marko Halanevych, Iryna Kovalenko, and Olena Tsybulska wear some very interesting hats. They play Santa Fe as part of Currents New Media. — Paul Weideman
