Objects of Art; The American Indian Art Show; and Whitehawk Antique Indian & Ethnographic Art Show
The largest juried Native arts event in the world, the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts’ 97th annual Santa Fe Summer Indian Market, is coming next week. But several shows beforehand provide a rich visual and cultural array of indigenous art, along with informative art lectures.
The 9th annual Objects of Art Santa Fe fair runs through Sunday, Aug. 12, at El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe (555 Camino de la Familia). Objects of Art features more than 70 gallery owners and other exhibitors presenting works from around the world in contemporary and historic media. The eclectic show displays work by Maynard Dixon (1875-1946); on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 1 p.m., exhibit curator Mark Sublette lectures on the centennial of Dixon’s first show in New Mexico. There is a furniture exhibition of large and small tables, chairs, and desks by George (1905-1990) and Mira Nakashima; Nakashima gives a talk on her father’s legacy at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12. Regular show price is $15, Friday, Aug. 10, through Aug. 12, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For details, visit objectsofartsantafe.com.
The same organizers behind Objects of Art are also presenting a four-day event, the Antique American Indian Art Show Santa Fe, dedicated to pre-1950 American Indian art, from Tuesday, Aug. 14 through Aug. 17, also at El Museo. The opening night party for this show is Aug. 14 at 6 p.m., with $50 tickets benefitting KNME. This show’s collection of indigenous artwork includes Hopi and Zuni katsinas, Plains and prairie beadwork, Pomo, Apache, and Tlingit baskets, Pueblo pottery, rare Navajo weavings, and more. On Wednesday, Aug. 15, Brian Vallo, director of the Indian Arts Research Center at the School for Advanced Research, presents a talk on the stewardship of private collections at the IARC. As with Objects of Art, all talks are held at 1 p.m. in the lecture room. Public show days are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, through Friday, Aug. 17.
