MA

Octavia Spencer plays the villain in this horror movie about a lonely, socially awkward woman (Spencer) who finds a modicum of acceptance when a group of teenagers befriend her. Initially, they use her to buy them beer and let them party at her house, but they eventually accept her into their circle, even giving her the nickname “Ma.” The attention flatters the unhinged Ma, who soon develops an unhealthy, and eventually murderous, attachment to the kids. Rated R. 99 minutes. Regal Stadium 14 and Violet Crown. (Not reviewed)

NONFICTION

In his latest film, acclaimed French filmmaker Olivier Assayas trains his camera on the publishing world. This ensemble piece centers around editor Alain Danielson (Guillaume Canet), novelist Léonard Spiegel (Vincent Macaigne), and Alain’s actress wife Selena (Juliette Binoche). Alain struggles to inform Léonard that his autobiographical novels aren’t selling in a changing literary landscape. As these characters, and others, muse about the state of art and commerce, they also hop in bed with one another in various combinations. Rated R. 108 minutes. In French with subtitles. Violet Crown. (Not reviewed)

ROCKETMAN

On the platform heels of 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody, this biopic tells the story of another brilliant, flamboyant British rock icon: Reginald Dwight, better known as Elton John (played by Taron Egerton). The story follows his personal life and rise to fame, including meeting songwriting partner Bernie Taupin (Jamie Bell), developing his stage persona, and achieving global stardom while coming to terms with his homosexuality and celebrity. Reportedly per Elton’s request, the film doesn’t tone down the sex and drugs. It will likely contain many of his songs, including the number in the film’s title. Rated R. 121 minutes. Regal Santa Fe 6, Regal Stadium 14, and Violet Crown. (Not reviewed)
