> Icom M93D Handheld Radio

- BY MARK FUSCO

Building off of the success of Icom’s popular M92D, the recently announced M93D handheld radio features the company’s latest flat-sheet keypad, built-in DSC receiver, and an internal GPS. “The M93D will be a critical component of any boater’s onboard safety-at-sea equipment,” says David McLain, National Marine Sales Manager for Icom America. “Ideal for the bluewater cruiser to the small kayaker, the M93D combines advanced safety features with an intuitive user interface for faster and easier access to radio functions.”

Perhaps an unsung hero for anyone who has ever tried to broadcast during a chaotic situation, the M93D sports advanced noise cancelling, which Icom claims can reduce background noise by up to 90 percent on both incoming and outgoing transmissions. Combined with Icom’s AquaQuake technology, which uses low-frequency sound waves to clear water away from the radio’s speaker grill to prevent muffled audio, the M93D ensures the best possible transmission in any setting. All of this is useless, of course, should the battery fail, an oft problem for most GPS-enabled handheld radios. In this regard, Icom went the extra mile, loading the M93D with a powerful 1,500Ah lithium-ion battery capable of providing users with over nine hours of operation without a recharge.

Should your radio take an unplanned bounce overboard, Icom has also devised a unique function it calls “Float ‘n Flash.” Once in the water, a flashing light activates, making the unit easy to spot amongst the waves. Most brilliantly, the Float ‘n Flash feature turns on when it hits the water, whether the radio is on or off. Additional features include a 2.3-inch full dot matrix high-contrast display, IPX7 waterproof rating, 50 waypoint memories with alphanumeric names for navigation, and loud BTL 900mW speaker. An unstoppable handheld that is ready when you need it most.
