Pilot Civilian Air Rescue

MISSION Missions of mercy in Arma 3

- PS

phil says... “There’s always somewhere new to crash.”

Calling Arma 3 a military simulator is a little inaccurate. Really, it’s a warzone simulator—capable of depicting not just conflict, but also the lives of those operating around it. Case in point: Pilot Civilian Air Rescue, an Arma 3 scenario about flying an unarmed civilian chopper across the game’s war-torn island of Altis.

Your job is to ferry doctors to outposts, extract lost soldiers, transport wounded civilians, and generally move people away from angry men and their guns.

As you may possibly have realized by now, playing Pilot Civilian Air Rescue requires you fly a helicopter—one of Arma’s more difficult challenges. The CH-49 Mohawk you’re given is a bulky thing, and many of the mission objectives call for a delicate landing on uneven terrain. Crucially however, the mod’s civilian theme means that your role is purely logistical, which gives you time to perfect the art. Or at least to get good enough at it that through liberal use of the auto-hover function, you can perform somewhat effectively.

It’s worth doing for the unique perspective the scenario brings. Flying on my first assignment, with no agency over the battles below, I put all of my focus into the task at hand. I ignored the hostile red dots on my radar display. True, I could be shot down at any moment, but so what? I had a job to do: picking up perfectly mobile civilians from the scene of a car crash.

At the start of the scenario, you can select from a variety of settings, such as weather, time of day or the frequency of helicopter malfunctions. Oh that’s right, I forgot to mention: your helicopter can malfunction. Luckily, if you crash, a rescue chopper will be dispatched to collect you. If it crashes, then you’re really in trouble.

You can download Pilot Civilian Air Rescue directly from the Steam Workshop, where you’ll also find creator RobJ’s full Helicopter Pilot series.
