Destiny 2 comes to PC
Bungie’s shooter series jumps onto our computers
Destiny is finally coming to PC in the form of the second entry in the series. Bungie’s FPS/MMO hybrid has been a phenomenon on consoles, evolving from a rough base game with a dreadful story into a brilliant, all-encompassing online shooter theme park (with a dreadful story). For whatever reason, it never attempted to make the leap to PC, despite being built on the foundations of genres that were basically invented for PC. The menus in the game even mimicked mouse control, but with a controller. It should’ve been on PC.
Destiny2 will arrive in September alongside the console versions, which is incredibly exciting given the game’s potential to find an enormous online fanbase. The original Destiny was structured like an MMO, with an extended story mode, raids, strikes and PvP multiplayer. This was combined with daily challenges, class configurations, rare weapons, fancy gear to acquire, and a long road to levelling your character up to the cap, making it a terrific timesink. It’s the game that managed to poke a bunch of Team PCG into buying PlayStation 4s (except Andy—he just played Alien: Isolation five more times instead).
We’re expecting a similar deal with Destiny 2, but with some tweaks as it transitions onto PC. The combat in the original game felt very well tuned for controller play in terms of player accuracy. How that will work on PC remains a mystery, but since Bungie created some of the best-feeling guns ever with the original, we’re not too worried.
The story of Destiny2 sees the last safe human city fall to an army called the Red Legion. You’re tasked with creating your own Guardian, crossing the solar system and rallying an army to retake the place.
This is one of the last big multiformat exclusives to make its way to PC, and Bungie’s first game on PC since Halo2. After a few fallow years, it also shows signs of life in the MMO genre. Samuel Roberts
