50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 1 No. 34 Thursday, Aug. 24, 1966

Lloyd Miller has purchased the Fina service station in Pea Ridge and has changed the outlet to a Skelly station. The station will feature Skelly gasoline and carry all major brands of oil and accessorie­s.

The Golden Rope Cafe in Pea Ridge is now under management of Mr. and Mrs. William L. Powell, who plan to change the name to Bill’s Cafe in the near future. Prices on hamburgers and cheeseburg­ers have been reduced in order to better accommodat­e school children who wish to eat off campus, according to Powell.

Fred McKinney, a former mayor and city recorder for all but one of the past 15 years, has announced that he will not seek reelection as city recorder in the Nov. 2 general election.

Paving of parking areas used by shoppers in downtown Pea Ridge got underway last week with finishing touches being applied the first of this week. New pavement is being laid in the areas next to the White’s Auto store garage and across the alley next door to the Post Office. The new parking surface is enhanced further by curbs and gutters which were installed earlier this summer.

Pea Ridge Council members heard a threeprong­ed presentati­on from Dr. Alan Winter about skunks, fire hydrants, and the city’s water and sewer charges.

LaVerne Watson grew sunflowers so tall they stretched over the peak of her roof.

The Volunteer Ambulance Service of Northeast Benton County will have its second annual Fall Festival Saturday, Sept. 13, at Garfield School.

Two men, Alvin Green and Carl J. “Cotton Carter, have filed as candidates for mayor. Sandy Easley, incumbent recorder and treasurer, has filed for reelection to that spot.

The Pea Ridge United Fund will launch its 1996 fund-raising campaign Sept. 7 and 8 with softball tournament­s at the Pea Ridge Day Park. Jason Tennant, United Fund president, said the goal is $30,000.

Garfield City Council made decisions this month to change water rates, meter deposits and meter hookup charges.

The Friends of Pea Ridge National Military Park, a new not-for-profit organizati­on, elected officers. David Wiemer, Bella Vista, is the new president.

Alan Spivey and Fred Walker, seniors at Pea Ridge High School, spent a week this summer at Boys State at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.

Vernon Leach filed to run for mayor, making the race a three-way race. Others running were incumbent mayor Jackie Crabtree and Jerry Burton.

Mike Botson filed for the City council seat held by Bob Cottingham, who filed for re-election.

Blackhawk Pride Night was slated for Friday with performanc­es by both junior and senior cheerleade­rs and scrimmages by football planned. The new press box at Blackhawk Stadium was finished and ready for the new season.

A public hearing was slated to hear the public’s response to a proposal to replace Ross Salvage Road with three close parallel roads — Oakley, Bush Boulevard and Dove Road.
