50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 1 No. 38 Thursday, Sept. 22, 1966
A special group of about 50 teen-age boys and perhaps a girl or two will visit Chicago the last week in November as delegates to the 45th National 4-H Club Congress. Among them will be the 1966 state 4-H Tractor project award winners.
The Pea Ridge Blackhawks will face their arch rivals, the Gravette Panthers, at Pea Ridge this Friday at 7:30 p.m. on the Pea Gridiron. The Pea Ridge Blackhawks coached by Joe Dorman, will be out to notch their fourth win without a defeat, after having defeated Gentry 38-7, Prairie Grove 37-12 and Farmington 26-6.

The Pea Ridge City Park Commission elected officers Monday morning at its first official meeting. The officers are Billie Jines, chairman; Kathy Knox, vice chairman; and Joyce Hale, secretarytreasurer. It was agreed to set a goal of $14,000 to be raised in contributions to help finance development of the park.
The Junior ’Hawks made it 2-0 last Thursday with a 34-6 win over Gentry in their first hometown performance. Stars of the show were Rusty Webb and Cecil Davis who accounted for all the touchdowns and most of the total 392 yards accumulated by the Pea Ridge offense.
The Pea Ridge High School Blackhawks suffered their first defeat of the season last Friday at Farmington.
The Pea Ridge bi-annual Wild Coon Hunt and Bench Show will be Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Benton County fairgrounds in Bentonville. Activities at this U.K.C. sanctioned event will begin at 3 p.m. with a bench show. Winners of the September Pea Ridge Coon Hunters Association are Gene Jones and Steve Fryer, first; Don Shockley and Negel Hall, second; J.T. Webb and Roy Webb, third; Virgil Redell and J.D. Walker, fourth; and Ronnie Patton and Junior Fletcher, fifth.

Pea Ridge City Council passed two resolutions at its Sept. 11 meeting, put two probationary employees on permanent status, heard a proposal for increasing fire dues, approved a novel solution to a school crosswalk problem, heard some Police Department requests and ended up approving preliminary engineering studies for extending city water lines.
Garfield City Council members decided to replace the city water system’s chlorinator and reviewed other matters in a regular meeting Sept. 15. Mayor Bobby Flinkinger said the chlorinator is not dependable and that “way too much” chlorine is in the city’s water now.
Shelly Kellengarber, 12, won first place Saturday at Gentry was was named 1986 4-H champion for her pullets. She is the daughter of Paul and Brenda Kellenbarger.
Northwest Arkansas Banchares Inc., Bentonville, plans to file a petition with the Federal Reserve Board for permission to acquire the Bank of Pea Ridge, McIlroy Bank & Trust, Fayetteville, and Siloam Springs Banchsares Inc., which has its home office in Bentonville.

City inspector Bob Pierson presented Planning Commission recommendations to the Pea Ridge City Council on Sept. 17. The council approved the rezoning of a 17-acre section being developed as Richard Davis’ subdivision and another section being developed as Tony Steel subdivision that connect to the city park as recommended by the commission.
John Knox will retire this Friday after more than 24 years as a ranger at Pea Ridge National Military Park. Knox, who said he only had to pull his sidearm once int eh line of duty, said that most days at the park are routine and uneventful.
Randy Townzen of Bentonville recently completed the mural on the history of Pea Ridge. The mural is on the wall of the Community Room in the Pea Ridge Emergency Services building.
The Garfield City Council adopted two ordinances at its September meeting revising the water rates and designating the places ordinances will be posted.
Only two weeks remain before the eighth annual Pea Ridge Lions Club International Mule Jump set for Saturday, Oct. 5.

The polls were open 12 hours yesterday for voters to decide on who will represented them on the Pea Ridge School District 109 Board. Running were incumbent Mike Villines and Jennifer Wood.
Jessica Funk, Pea Ridge Parks Commission chairman, recently received a $1,000 check from Mack Shook, area plant supervisor for Century Tel of Northwest Arkansas, a contributor for the past several years.
Summit Meadows, a subdivision being developed on the north side of Slack Street (Arkansas Highway 72) just west of the four-way stop, was to be presented to city planners at a special Planning Commission meeting last night just prior to the regularly-scheduled City Council meeting.
