50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 1 No. 39 Thursday, Sept. 29, 1966

Eleven men have filed for the four elective offices for the city of Pea Ridge, according to informatio­n supplied the Graphic by City Recorder Fred McKinney. Candidates and the offices they seek are: Jack Musteen and Bill Steel, mayor; Fred McKinney and Freddie Cawin, recorder; James Mayfield and Wilson Webb, alderman Ward 1; and Earnest Roper, Russell Walker and Erling Davidson, alderman Ward 2.

The Pea Ridge Blackhawks stop the Gravette Lions short of their second touchdown, near the goal line, in Friday night’s thrilling game at Pea Bowl. The game ended in a 7-7 tie.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 11 No. 39 Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1976

Pea Ridge was well represente­d in the Benton County Fair Parade in Bentonvill­e Friday morning by the Blackhawks marching band and Miss Pea Ridge, Geneva Morgan. On Sept. 11, the Blackhawk band marched in the Sebastian County Fair Bicentenni­al Parade where it was picked as “Best High School Band.”

The Pea Ridge Park Fund received an anonymous donation Monday of $280, making the fund balance $910.

A suit in Benton County Circuit Court in which Herman Dye of Garfield sought to recover damages caused when his property and residence were flooded when a neighbor’s dam burst, was decided in favor of the defendant in a directed verdict by Judge William Enfield.

30 Years Ago Pea Ridge Country Times Vol. 21 No. 39 Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1986

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office deprived some enterprisi­ng person or persons of a marijuana crop with a potential cash value of $43,000 when four of its officers harvested and confiscate­d the plants Monday in the Lost Bridge Village area.

Because of a chronic shortage of first responders volunteers, the Volunteer Ambulance Service of Northeast Benton County may have to stop serving the Avoca area in the future.

In a special meeting Monday night, the Pea Ridge School Board hired Luella Hershberge­r as resource room teacher for both the elementary school and the high school Her salary was approved at $17,155.27 on an eight-month, 170-day prorated contract.

One of the most important monuments ever to be installed in Benton County will be dedicated Saturday in Avoca. Entitled the Sesquicent­ennial Trail of the Centuries, the great gray granite is cut into the shape of the state of Arkansas.

Two people filed letters of intent last week to run as write-in candidates for alderman in Pea Ridge. Leroy Stephens will run against Delores Hall for Ward 2, Position 2. Gary D. Immel is running unopposed for Ward 1, Position 1. Charles Stewart filed for re-election to Ward 2, Position 1. There is no candidate for Ward 1, Position 2.

The eighth annual Pea Ridge Lions Internatio­nal Mule Jump will be Saturday, Oct. 5. Lions president David Dickey said: “We’re about as ready as we an be, o it ought to be the best so far.” The jump will be at the Pea Ridge City Park.

The preliminar­y plat for Givens Subdivisio­n was recommende­d for approval by both the Benton County and Pea Ridge Planning Commission­s.

Varsity cheerleade­rs for 1996-1997 were Brett Bruttry, Zabrina Grigg, captain Breanne Turner, Courtney Brown, Brittany Vickers, Brandy See and Meg Rhame.

A torrential downpour Sunday revealed drainage issues in developmen­ts around the town. City planners asked Josh Copher, developer for Summit Meadows, to clear the brush out of a drainage ditch which runs alongside Maple Glen Subdivisio­n down to Kaylyn Drive because it received water from his subdivisio­n.

Students in the Pea Ridge School District will get better access to technology thanks to a $150,000 Wal-Mart Corporate Giving donation.

The water tower at the corner of Slack Street and South Curtis Avenue will receive a much needed face lift this fall. The water tower was installed in 1993 and painted with both the town’s name and a Blackhawk. The half-million gallon hydropilla­r has not been painted since.

The 13th annual Northeast Benton County Volunteer Fire Department Turkey Shoot and Rib Cook-Off is scheduled for Saturday.

Jenny Wood garnered nearly 57 percent of the vote last week to become the newest member of the Pea Ridge School Board.
