50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 1 No. 44 Thursday, Nov. 3, 1966

The ladies of Pea Ridge Methodist Church cordially invite the public to attend their annual bazaar and chicken noodle dinner at the fellowship hall, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 10. There is a charge of 50 cents. Christmas shop and eat and serve humanity in a special way. The proceeds go to mission work.

Sample copies of this issue of the Graphic are being mailed to all residents in an effort to better acquaint them with the Graphic and also show the many fine businesses awaiting to serve that can be found here in Pea Ridge.

Virgil Green, owneropera­tor of the Aunt Sally’s Market, changed the name of the store to Green’s Market.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 11 No. 44 Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1976

The long-awaited funding from the federal Environmen­tal Protection Agency (EPA) to help finance an extension of the Pea Ridge sewerage system and constructi­on of a new treatment plant may be approved within the next two months. The state department of Pollution Control and Ecology last month approved as “eligible for funding” the new treatment plant and part of the sewerage system extension, which is to include about 8.8 miles of new 8- and 6-inch lines with pump stations and force mains.

Three black men accused of robbing Garfield Post Office last Thursday were scheduled to be arraigned in Benton County Circuit Court Tuesday on charges of aggravated robbery, theft of property and conspiracy to commit these crimes.

Phase two of the threestage plan for constructi­on to complete Twelve Corners Road from Ark. Hwy. 72 to U.S. Hwy. 62 in Garfield area is expected to be ready for bid letting this month, according to Benton County Judge Railey Steele.

The junior ’Hawks football team clinched the number one spot in the Ozark Conference Thursday with a 47-12 victory over Winslow and the senior Blackhawks travel to Elkins Friday to do battle for fourth place.

30 Years Ago Pea Ridge Country Times Vol. 21 No. 44 Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1986

Thousands of lives were lost and millions of feathers ruffled when a broiler transport truck owned by George’s of Springdale collided with a small car on Ark. Hwy. 94 south of Cardin Road in Pea Ridge Friday morning. Only a few of the nearly 20,000 chickens in the cages on the truck survived the accident, according to Pea Ridge Marshal Hugh Turner.

Fire Chief Allen Merrit said October had been a productive month for Pea Ridge Volunteer Fire Department. Firemen Rick Whitaker, Darrell Bone, Jerry Collins and Ray Easley attended a six-hour fire school conducted in Rogers by Arkansas Fire Academy concerning car fires.

The Pea Ridge running ’Hawks hosted an invitation­al Saturday morning. This was the second year for this meet. Kern Sorrell proved that tremendous amount of hard work pays off, winning the boys individual race. He won by some 300 yards on the 500-meter course and establishe­d a new course record lowering the last winning mark from 19:12 to 18:04.

20 Years Ago The TIMES of Northeast Benton County Vol. 31 No. 44 Thursday, Oct. 31, 1996

There’s a race for constable in the Mt. Vernon Township, which includes Pea Ridge, but you won’t find it on the ballot in the Nov. 5 general election. Three Pea Ridge area men have notified Benton County Clerk Mary Lou Slinkard that they are write-in candidates for the constable position. They are Al Butler, Martin Marler and Charles Nesbitt.

The old Post Office in Garfield is now Ye Olde Post Office, an antique shop owned by Marilyn Venden of Garfield and Molly Weaver of Gentry.

Rick Weidner, chairman of Northeast Benton County Volunteer Fire Department, accompanie­d the maiden voyage of the new fire boat launched from the Ark. Hwy. 12 ramp east of Rogers on Friday, Oct. 25, with Fire Chief Joe Phillippe and volunteer fireman Don Green at the controls.

10 Years Ago The TIMES of Northeast Benton County Vol. 41 No. 44 Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006

Jerry Burton, current city council man and mayor hopeful, sat next to Mayor Jackie Crabtree while they both answered questions at the candidate forum Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Pea Ridge Junior High School cafeteria. Crabtree has held the office of mayor since it was only a part-time job 12 years ago and Burton said in his opening statements that it was “time for a change.”

Hiring an EMT to staff both the Fire Department and Ambulance Department eight hours a day is the initial step to becoming full time to meet the needs of this growing community, say city officials.

Arvest Bank is expected to present their large scale developmen­t plan to the Pea Ridge Planning Commission at its regular meeting Tuesday, Nov. 7.
