50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 1 No. 52 Thursday, Dec. 29, 1966

Ralph Bolain, Benton County assessor, announced a schedule for the month of January for the assessing of personal property. It is important that each person brings a paid tax receipt for 1965, Bolain said.

Winter moved into Arkansas last Thursday night covering the area with heavy snow and freezing temperatur­es. Unofficial estimate of the depth of the snow ran from 6 to 8 inches in the Pea Ridge and Garfield areas. The snow closed the Pea Ridge School one day before the scheduled Christmas vacation and prevented students from holding their Christmas party and gift exchange.

Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Nichols and children of Tingley, Iowa, are visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Patterson and Mr. and Mrs. Russell Nichols.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 11 No. 52 Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1976

Don Clark was presented his “First dollar of clear profit” plaque by Pea Ridge Chamber of Commerce president Sam Spivey. Clark is owner of Don’s Kustom Kar Kleaning, recently opened in a new building at Smith Street and Lee Town Road.

Pea Ridge City Council accepted a low bid from Williams Ford Tractor and Equipment Company in Fayettevil­le on a new tractor for the city. The bid was $2,986 for a new Ford 3400 series gasoline industrial utility tractor.

The idea of the Pea Ridge City Park grew out of the City’s bicentenni­al effort. A bicentenni­al grant of $1,500 from January 1995 was to be spent on park developmen­t projects. Land (3.76 acres) was donated by Mr. and Mrs. O.L. Clark and Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Nesselhauf.

30 Years Ago Pea Ridge Country Times Vol. 21 No. 52 Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1986

Mary and Joseph and the infant Jesus, the three kings, the angel, the shepherd and the star were all portrayed Thursday night in Pea Ridge under the direction of Lexia Collier at the PTA-sponsored Christmas program.

Betty Gentry, superinten­dent of the Pea Ridge National Military Park, confirmed that the park will begin charging an entry fee of $1 per person early next year. Free admission will be available to all bonafide school groups on study tours, including home school students.

Five needy area families were helped last week when huge baskets of groceries, including the makings for Christmas dinner, were delivered by members of the Northwest Arkansas Amateur Radio Club. Project chairman David Perry said the program started last year.

The value of constructi­on in Pea Ridge during 1996 totaled nearly $3 million, said building inspector Bob Pierson. He said the total was $2,814,472. The figure far exceeded the 1995 total of $2,148,472. There were 25 permits issued for single family dwellings and two multi-family permits issued. “The value of new homes ranged from $39,000 to $111,000,” Pierson said.

The Pea Ridge City Council met Dec. 16 with 22 items on the agenda including several involving a water line extension project.

Pea Ridge High School senior Matt Easterling was named to the all-state football team, according to head coach Rob Bray.

Wal-Mart is making no promises about when — or if — a new store will be built in Pea Ridge, but City Council members approved a rezoning request for land purchased earlier this year by Wal-Mart at their regular meeting Dec. 19.

Santa Claus arrived in a helicopter to Garfield Elementary School. Eli Simec, 5, a student in the kindergart­en class of Jo Anne Williams, received a stocking filled with candy and other treats.
