50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 2 No. 10 Thursday, March 9, 1967

Mr. and Mrs. Fred McKinney returned last week from a trip to California won through an increase in feed tonage sales in a Ralston-Purina contest. The all-expense-paid trip centered in Los Angles, where the Pea Ridge couple attended a meeting for company associates. While in California, they visited Mr. and Mrs. Russel Frazier of Cucomonga, former Pea Ridge residents, and visited Disneyland and Universal Studios.

The regular meeting of the Extension Homemakers Club was held Feb. 28 at the clubhouse with Mrs. Phillip Patterson and Mrs. Marvin A. Roller hostesses for the cooperativ­e luncheon. The table was graced with satin roses.

Bill’s Citgo in Pea Ridge offered fisherman a challenge. During March, 10 gallons of regular gas would be awarded to the fisherman with the longest fish checked at the station by Saturday night, and five gallons to the fisherman with the second largest catch.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 12 No. 10 Wednesday, March 9, 1977

Dedication of the Pea Ridge City Park moved a step closer Sunday afternoon when the local Park Commission, meeting in regular monthly session, set the times for both the big community basket dinner and dedication and discussed other possible plans for the big day. The dedication festivitie­s are to begin at 1 p.m. Monday, May 30, (Memorial Day) with a basket dinner at which all are invited to spread their lunches together in an old Ozarks tradition.

Owen Wood of Pea Ridge received the Goodyear Conservati­on Award at the 10th annual Conservati­on Study Day held last Thursday at the Benton County Fairground­s, sponsored by the Benton County Conservati­on District. He was cited for “outstandin­g accomplish­ments in resource conservati­on.”

It was just 17 years ago this week on March 7, 1960, that the Pea Ridge Battlefiel­d became a national military park. The deed to 4,278 acres of land where the the North and South met in the bitter confrontat­ion that cost more than 2,000 lives, was handed to the federal government by then-Arkansas Gov. Orval E. Faubus.

30 Years Ago The TIMES of Northeast Benton County Vol. 22 No. 10 Wednesday, March 11, 1987

John Brown was elected to the Pea Ridge School Board Tuesday with 155 votes to Bob Harmon’s 69 and Jim Henson’s 33. The millage rate passed 169-88, while Fred McKinney was re-elected to the County School Board with 213 votes. Of 1,383 registered voters in the district, 264, or 19 percent, voted.

The curtains came down on a fine basketball season for the Lady Blackhawks last Wednesday night in the opening round of the state playoffs at the regional tournament hosted by County Line. The Lady Blackhawks advanced to the regional tournament by placing in the runner-up position in the district tournament the week earlier.

The Pea Ridge High School American Civil War History class visited the Pea Ridge National Military Park Friday, one day before the 125th anniversar­y of the battle. Making the trip with their teacher, Wade Kniseley, were Scooter Kilgore, Andy Pelfrey, Rick Holman, Robbie Morrison, Hubert Keene, James Robinson, James Shirley, Scott Alvarez, Mike Jones and Ronnie Goates.

20 Years Ago The TIMES of Northeast Benton County Vol. 32 No. 10 Thursday, March 13, 1997

The first-ever Pea Ridge High School girls softball opened their season this week in history. On Monday, the A-team won 6-5 over Berryville at Berryville. The B-team lost to Berryville 20-4. The girls hosted Eureka Springs Thursday at Pea Ridge Field Day.

The Garfield City Council discussed how to solve some of the city’s water problems at its March 4 meeting. Monthly reports on water usage have been showing a 25 to 35 percent loss of water. Some of the loss is due to leaks in meters, some is due to water meters not being pulled when a resident moves or doesn’t pay bills, and some is because certain residents rig pipes to connect to city lines illegally.

The Wholistic Life Center north of Pea Ridge announced that it has received a $10,200 donation from the Wal-Mart Foundation.

10 Years Ago The TIMES of Northeast Benton County Vol. 42 No. 10 Wednesday, March 14, 2007

William Francis Noone of Rogers collided Saturday with a tour bus on the Pea Ridge National Military Park. He was treated by emergency personnel from Volunteer Ambulance Service then taken by Air Evac to Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayettevil­le. Noone, of Rogers, was riding his bicycle Saturday during the re-enactment and tours of the park. He was wearing his helmet.

Of the more than 200 runners competing in the 3.1 mile run at the Pea Ridge National Military Park this past Saturday were several members of the Friends of the PRNMP Foundation. Most notably was Bob Sigafoos, 83½, by his own admission. He ran the 5K in 45 minutes. “My last race was a 10K in Memphis,” he said. “I needed a challenge — a goal.”

It was a memorable basketball season in Pea Ridge. The Blackhawks finished with a 21-10 record under first-year coach Charley Clark and went to the state tournament for the first time since 1979.

The Pea Ridge Youth Competitiv­e Basketball fifth-grade boys played in a tournament in Washburn, Mo., this past weekend and won first place. The fifthgrade girls B-team took District Championsh­ip at Gentry, March 3.
