50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 2 No. 11 Thursday, March 16, 1967

Some 300 names had been signed by Monday of this week to a petition requesting that local schools be changed back to the Pea Ridge School District. A required 350 signatures of qualified voters in this school district were necessary by Wednesday to qualify. For about a decade the Pea Ridge Schools have been part of the Benton County School District No. 1 in conjunctio­n with Sulphur Springs.

New recruits for the Pea Ridge Boy Scout Troop recently organized here are being sought, according to Scoutmaste­r Virgil Green. The new troop, which is Pea Ridge Boy Scout Troop No. 113, now has 14 members. Troop leader is Paul Arnold.

Gary Raymer of Pea Ridge claimed both prizes in Bill’s Citgo Fishing Contest last week. Raymer brought in two lineside bass, one an 18-inch and the other 16 and threequart­er inches Saturday. The catch won for him both the first and second prizes at the station as the longest fish brought in during the first full week of March.

Complaints from a group of 15 county courthouse employees from the County Clerk’s office, Voter Registrati­on office, County Collector’s office and County Assessor’s office were aired last Wednesday afternoon at a public meeting at the courthouse. Noticeably absent was County Judge Railey Steele who was the target of most of the criticism by the group of employees.

Dr. Gary France, Pea Ridge veterinari­an, attended the 61st annual winter meeting of Arkansas Veterinari­an Medical Associatio­n Feb. 20-22 in Little Rock. A total of 166 veterinari­ans attended from around the state.

Pea Ridge High School Band students earned 35 first- and second-place medals for their musical performanc­e at the Region Solo and Ensemble contest held on the John Brown University Campus at Siloam Springs. The medals were awarded following student solo and group performanc­es before panels of judges during the day-long contest.

The Bank of Seligman has a new building of wood and stone, in a brand new location, at the junction of Missouri Hwy. 37 and Hwy. 112. Operations began in the new facility Feb. 17, just one month ago. For years, the bank has been in an old structure downtown, with too little space and inadequate parking. Bank president John Marks says space in the the new building is more than tripled.

Larry Wilson and Bill Hedges, owners of Williamson Chapels in Cassville, Mo., and Shell Knob, Mo., and the McQueen Funeral Home in Wheaton, Mo., announce their purchase of the Dean and Georgia Douglas property in Seligman, Mo., for use as the Williamson Seligman Chapel. The home was built in 1940 and was formerly owned by Dick and Irene Webb.

Congressma­n John Paul Hammerschm­idt has been asked by U.S. House of Representa­tives Speaker John Wright to join a 20-member Congressio­nal delegation to visit the Soviet Union next month for the formal invitation of the Supreme Soviet. Believed to be the highest-ranking House delegation to visit the Soviet Union, the group includes four leaders, three legislativ­e committee chairmen and 10 members of the Geneva Arms talks observer team.

Some residents east of Pea Ridge on Arkansas Highway 72 and on Patterson Road will soon have access to city water. The Pea Ridge Water Department began a project several months ago with the intent of significan­tly expanding its service area to provide a safe water supply and improve fire protection. Water superinten­dent Robert Button said, “We’re done with the south side of Highway 72 east, except for dressup.”

The Academic Spotlight was on Zabrina Grigg, 17, daughter of Mark and Donna Grigg of Pea Ridge. She graduated from Pea Ridge High School that spring with a 3.25 grade point average. Zabrina planned to enter Northwest Arkansas Community College in the fall and pursue what will eventually be a degree that will allow her to teach history. Zabrina was the treasurer of the senior class and treasurer of Future Farmers of America. She was a cheerleade­r and a member of the Spanish Club.

Crews from across the country spent several days last week at Pea Ridge National Military Park where they control-burned more than 500 acres. Mark Taylor, forestry technician at Buffalo River National River said, “The purpose of most of the burn is to reduce the numbers of cedars.” He said, ” This area was farm land at the time of the Battle of Pea Ridge and the cedars came in and took over.”

Two Pea Ridge High School students were expelled for the remainder of the year following an expulsion hearing March 14. The buying and selling of prescripti­on drugs were the issues presented to the School Board. According to a student accused of buying the pills, another student carried hydrocodon­e to school and sold it to her for a dollar.

Lights are to be installed on the Pea Ridge High School softball field at the cost of $84,300, after Pea Ridge School Board members approved the low bid and deducted several items to decrease the cost.

Michael Woods of Pea Ridge was chosen to the Class 3A All-Tournament team. He was one of six Benton County athletes placed on all-tournament teams at state basketball tournament­s. Woods, a senior, scored 12 points for the Blackhawks (21-10) in their 62-54 loss to Rose Budd in the first round loss in Harrison.
