50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 2 No. 16 Thursday, April 20, 1967

Parallel parking went into effect in Pea Ridge Tuesday, replacing the diagonal parking that has long existed in the downtown business section. The change affects the business section that borders Arkansas highways 94 and 72, which form a cross in Pea Ridge.

Joe Dorman, coach of the Pea Ridge Blackhawks, was honored by being selected as a member of the coaching staff of the annual All-Star High School Football Classic. Dorman began his duties at Pea Ridge in 1963, the year football was started here. During the past three years, his teams have won 24 games, losing only three and tying one. The Blackhawks were undefeated conference champs in 1965 and were runners-up last year.

The grand opening of White’s service department in Pea Ridge, directly behind White’s Auto Store, was held. Clinton H. Schooley of Pea Ridge completed training at Bear Manufactur­ing Company’s Automotive Safety Service School in Rock Island, Ill., where he received intensive training in alignment, balancing and frame straighten­ing, learning the latest techniques in this safety service.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 12 No. 16 Wednesday, April 20, 1977

Two Pea Ridge men, Jerry W. Collins and Sammy G. Spivey, were selected for inclusion in the 1977 edition of “Outstandin­g Young Men of America,” a program co-sponsored by the United States Jaycees and leading men’s civic and service organizati­ons throughout the nation. Spivey, associated with Sisco Funeral Home in Pea Ridge, serves as president of the Chamber of Commerce and chief of the volunteer fire department. Collins is employed by White’s Auto Store.

Three 14-year-old boys, including Ken Easterling of Pea Ridge, were found safe and sound early Thursday morning following a latenight search for the youths after they were reported missing in a small boat on Beaver Lake. According to Sheriff’s department report, the trio rented a small boat and motor at Prairie Creek Boat Dock. The motor reportedly conked out on them in the Copper Mine area of the lake, west of Rocky Branch, where they rowed to shore. They made their way to a road and eventually to Copper Mine Lodge where they were found the next morning sleeping in a car.

Pea Ridge Marshal Hugh Turner presented his quarterly report to the Pea Ridge Council Thursday night. The report summarizes police activities in the city during January through March 1987. Warnings, arrests and citations made a total of 206 law enforcemen­t contacts for the department during the quarter.

Dollars contribute­d locally have helped over two dozen Pea Ridge students continue their education since the Pea Ridge Scholarshi­p fund was establishe­d in 1985. They have been helped with awards of about $7,000.

Students in Pea Ridge High School and Middle School are now using computer equipment bought by donations in memory of the father of one of the students. Doyle Graham, a Walmart executive who lived in Pea Ridge, died last year. His son, Brandon, is an eighth-grader at the school. A memorial fund raised approximat­ely $2,500, according to Donna Gaston, librarian in the Media Center.

In the last year-and-ahalf, Pea Ridge High School faculty and staff have been working as a team to set goals and initiate directives to improve the school, according to Pea Ridge High School Principal Jerry Endsley and counselor Judy Brink-Arney.

Classrooms are full to overflowin­g, and if the trend continues, Pea Ridge Elementary School will outgrow its current building. School board members will ask voters for a 2.2 millage increase to finance a new elementary building. The plan calls for moving ninth-grade students from the junior high school up to the high school and sixthgrade students to the junior high, making more room at the elementary for kindergart­en through fifth-grade students.

A new business venture grew from his son’s love of motocross, said Steve Bloxham, owner of Battlefiel­d Cycle Supply and Skateboard. The new shop, located at 201 Lee Town Road, opened earlier this month and is geared toward meeting the needs of motocross racers and skateboard enthusiast­s.
