50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 2 No. 20 Thursday, May 18, 1967

Pea Ridge Postmaster Stanley Buttry reminds rural patrons of the post office that this week — May 15-20 — is National Mailbox Improvemen­t Week.

The last day of classes in the Pea Ridge schools is scheduled for Monday, May 22. The teachers will work hard Tuesday through Thursday, completing records and report cards. Students will return May 26 to pick up the final tally of their year’s efforts for the 1966-67 school year.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 12 No. 20 Wednesday, May 18, 1977

Thirty-four Pea Ridge High School graduates from the Class of 1977 will be awarded diplomas at the commenceme­nt program at 8 p.m. Friday in the school gym. Short addresses will be delivered by valedictor­ian Diana Wilkerson, salutatori­an Pat Wright and class president Doug Fletcher. Diplomas will be presented by School Board president Keith Escue.

Mendenhall’s Pea Ridge Grocery specials running May 18 through May 24 included Colonial Bread, 1 lb. loaf, four for 99 cents; Wheaties 12 oz. box, 59 cents; and Texas grapefruit­s, 12 for 99 cents.

Bill McGuire, 16, a sophomore at Pea Ridge High School, won a first place trophy and a $50 cash prize in the old-time fiddling contest at the three-day Bluegrass Music Holiday Festival held recently at the Benton County Fairground­s in Bentonvill­e. Bill is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred McGuire of Rt. 4 Bentonvill­e, near Pea Ridge.

Pea Ridge swore in a new deputy, gave some raises, honored Charles Hardy, and proceeded with plans to draw up a new nuisance ordinance at the regular City Council meeting. Kelly Wallace, 35, a member of the Pine Bluff Police Dept. for the past three and onehalf years, was hired by City Marshal Hugh Turner at a salary of $1,100 per month effective May 15, on an “at will” basis pending adoption of an employee policy manual now being prepared.

The Pea Ridge Police Department destroyed liquor and drugs taken as evidence during the past year. The cases have been closed and evidence had to be destroyed. The liquor and beer were dumped, and the drugs burned.

Pea Ridge High School principal Jerry Endsley resigned. He has been principal since 1992. Endsley and his wife Charlotte are moving to Huntsville, where Mrs. Endsley will start a family medical practice. The Pea Ridge School Board accepted Endsley’s resignatio­n along with resignatio­ns of Middle School social studies teacher Jim Cheek and school nurse Bev Toepfer.

A Pea Ridge man — Norris E. Williams — has been recognized for his safety on his job. Williams, a profession­al over-the-road driver employee for USA Truck, Inc., of Van Buren, has driven more than 1,000,000 miles without being involved in a preventabl­e accident. Williams, who driving career spans more than 11 years, has been employed by USA Truck since 1995. k.

Joshua Ramsey has recently been named to the Arvest Bank, Pea Ridge, board of directors. “Joshua is a natural leader,” John Lasater, bank president, said.
