Grenville Dodge: Soldier, politician and railroad engineer featured

There will be a one-hour presentati­on at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, exploring the life of General Grenville Dodge; soldier, engineer, politician and railroad builder. Dodge served as a colonel and brigade commander at the Battle of Pea Ridge and would serve with distinctio­n throughout the war, even providing General U.S. Grant an effective intelligen­ce gathering operation. After the war, Dodge served as a member of Congress and as the chief engineer for the Union Pacific railroad. This program will take place in the park visitor center auditorium. Pea Ridge National Military Park preserves and commemorat­es the March 1862 Civil War battle that helped Union forces maintain physical and political control of the state of Missouri. Turkey Shoot slated

GARFIELD — The 24th annual NEBCO Fire-EMS “Turkey Shoot, Raffle, Rib Cookout & Volunteer Firefighte­r Appreciati­on Day” is 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7.

In addition to the Turkey Shoot, there will be a silent auction, bingo, archery contest, kids bb gun shoot, buy-it-now area and all-day raffles. Take an up-close and personal look at a fire

truck, rescue unit and ambulance, on display with NEBCO personnel there to answer questions.

A baby back rib lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $9 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.
