Jr. Girls track win 1st

Junior Lady Blackhawk Shelby Dunlap captured three events to pace the Lady Blackhawk track squad at the Rogers Heritage War Eagle Invitation­al last week.

Dunlap took first in the triple jump (34’6”), 100 hurdles (16.1) and 300 hurdles (50.0) to lead the ’Hawk scoring with 30 points. Cassidy Mooneyhan took another victory in the pole vault (11’0”) and added a fifth place in the 200 (27.57) to score 14 points.

The other first place winner in the meet for the girls was Kynley Burton, who soared 4’8” to win the high jump event.

Other individual scorers for the ’Hawks include: Tori Scrogham, seventh in the long jump (13’9”), eighth in the discus (75’10”) and second in the pole vault (7’6”); Jamison Toms, fourth in the long jump (15’8”); Leire Leon, fifth in the triple jump (28’2”); Meredith Mitchel, sixth in the discus (80’1”); Lindsay Law, sixth in the long jump (14’1”); Nina Reed, eighth in the 400 (1:12.0); and Payton Anderson, fifth in the 100 hurdles (20.4).

In the boys’ division, Cooper Elliott scored 21.5 points to spark the boys scoring. Elliott race to victory in the 100 in a very fast 11.1 clocking. Elliott was also second in the 200 (22.6) and was a part of the third place 4x100 relay (44.59) and the second place 4x200 relay (1:33.75). Other members of the 4x100 was Drew Winn, Jordan Witcher and Connor Escajeda with Witcher, Escajeda and Shaed Cates joning Elliott in the 4x200.

The hurdle crew of Kenny Dorsey and Justin Koon scored 18 points overall in the 100 and 300 hurdles. Dorsey was fourth in the 100 hurdles (16.38) and third in the 300 hurdles (43.95) with Koon taking fifth in the 300 (44.77) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (16.85),.

Robby Pickthal was the ’Hawk leader in the throwing events, taking seventh in both the shot put (37’3”) and discus throw (102’7”).

Connor Escajeda ran a fantastic 50.83 clocking in the 400, likely an all-time school record. He has qualified for the 4A state meet with the effort, and has establishe­d himself as a contender for medalist honors in the meet next month.

In the 800, Cates also earned a high finish, taking third with a 2:11.6 mark.

Rounding out the individual scoring was Drew Winn’s third place in the high jump (6’0”), Matthew Craig, fifth in the high jump (5’10”), Zach Woods, third in the pole vault (11’0”) and Lance Nunley, seventh in the pole vault (9’6”).

The ’Hawks two other relay teams also scored. The 4x400 was fourth (3:53.6) with Dorsey, Adam Trammel, Macguire Smith and Trevor Henry running legs. The 4x800 relay composed of Cates, Kevin Vasquez, Smith and Henry also finished fourth (9:16.7).

The ’Hawks are working towards the 4A-1 District meet coming up at the end of April with state finalist berths on the line in the 11 running events and six field events that will be contested at the 4A state championsh­ips. Several Blackhawk athletes have already qualified for the state meet based on individual achievemen­ts thus far in 2018.
