Pea Ridge Volunteer Fire Chief Allen Merritt told the City Council last week that residents might find that their fire insurance rates will increase following the next audit of the Fire Department by the Insurance Services Organization. Merritt said such an increase would result because of deficiencies in equipment and a shortage of trained people.
The Pea Ridge School Board has adopted what appears to be a pretty good promotion and retention policy. The policy not only takes into consideration the grades a student makes, but is also considers the psychological effect that failure might have on the youngster whose academic performance is such that he might already be several years older than his classmates. Such a student will be directed into a special program. The more typical student with an achievement problem will be identified early enough to be the focus of a learning program designed specifically for him. The idea, according to Elementary School principal Ozy Murphey, is to identify one with problems early enough to do something to adequately help him with the fundamentals rather than attempt to provide him with last-ditch remedial help about the time he is expected to enter high school.
The chairman of the McDonald County, Mo., County Commission said last week that he is not too optimistic that improvements will be made any time soon on an eighth of a mile stretch of McDonald County Road KK just north of the Arkansas line at Jacket, Mo. The gravel road is an extension of Arkansas Highway 265 from Pea Ridge to the Missouri line.
